First, the inside has got some great options for dog owners (and I think some for cats too!). My friend bought a toy for her friend’s puppy, and the owner was very friendly.
We came back in the evening for dinner and sat outside for a lovely meal. There’s not too much seating outside, maybe two or three tables, but it wasn’t busy when we went (and in general it was rather quiet in town).
I ordered the jackfruit banh mi — I’ve never had jackfruit before and I loved this SO MUCH! Ate it all up. Also I don’t actually like kimchi but I loved every bite of this meal. My friend got the chorizo street tacos and enjoyed her meal as well. Everything was so tasty, didn’t take long for our order to come out, and service and atmosphere of the place was wonderful. We mostly cooked each meal during the trip to avoid going out (with the pandemic and all), but I’m so glad we spent our last dinner in town at The Dog Spot!
The Dog Spot is a small table restaurant and pet shop in one. The food is incredible. We live in Portland where the culinary creations can be too exotic, to odd and too forced. But, the team at the Dog Spot mixed traditional ingredients with super flavorful alternatives to make the ideal dish over and over again. Two kids devoured there street tacos and Mac and cheese, and the wife and I had Banh Mi and a salad. The surprise of the day was how incredible the Jack Fruit Banh Mi sandwich was. I ate it all!!
Best food, fun spot, and supporting local families. Best of all factors.
Oh, don’t forget to get a glass of the Pomegranate Sangria
The menu is very niche…lots of fermented items, several meatless options, and definitely not your average run of the the mill menu selection. Bahn mi with tofu for example. Vegan mac and cheese, which my daughter ordered…was very tangy.
We ordered a bread appetizer that came with fermented dips…my fav was a creamy dip made from beets. There was also chimmichurri and a tapenade. All 3 fermented, so had a vinegary flavor. I had shrimp tacos which were good…so full i had to eat some shrimp with my fork before trying to pick up and hold the tacos because it didn’t all fit…not a bad problem to have! Bf had the morels and gnocchi. Generous servings.
One thing i would say about the mac n cheese is that some of the noodles were dried out/crunchy and maybe could have spent less time under the broiler. Maybe a torch to brown the top would be better so the noodles don’t dry out.
There were maybe 3 small tables inside and 2 tables outside so not a great spot for large groups or when it is busy.
This is a good place if you like fermented or vegan foods. Not great if you are looking for mainstream american food i.e. a cheeseburger or other “basic” foods. If you are looking for something different, this is the spot.
One server lady working and she was friendly. She does this weird laugh after everything she says which made conversation a bit awkward but not really a complaint. Not overly attentive. I think the food came and then we did not see her at the table again, which was fine for us as we did not need anything extra.
Only a couple of them are needed I think. They were horrible it was a different spice I had never had before and it literally burning my mouth
