The pub has a very nice, cosy British feel to it that I hadn’t come across in Canada before. The food and drink were prepared very well, I recommend their breakfast. Food and drink prices were very reasonable, and they have a good happy hour!
Nicolle and Bailey are brilliant, they made my first visit at Pheasant Plucker, a great, memorable one.
I will definitely be returning to the Pheasant Plucker, and if you’re in Hamilton, definitely pay a visit!
Leading up to the event, we worked closely with Elena, who was excellent throughout the entire planning process. We discussed guest count, staffing, menus to make things easier on the kitchen, and fees. It was clearly agreed that there would be a $150 staffing fee and a $25 outside cake fee, which included cutting the cake.
On the night of the event, the experience was unfortunately mixed.
Our server had to be tracked down multiple times from the downstairs section just to take orders. When it came time for the cake, we were told cutting it was “not part of the job description,” so we served it ourselves (which was fine, but then made the cake fee confusing).
As guests began to leave and pay their bills, an automatic 18% gratuity had been added due to the group size — which is understandable. However, no one was informed that gratuity was already included. As a result, several guests tipped on top of the automatic gratuity, unknowingly paying double. When I raised this with the server, the response was essentially, “You have to understand, waitresses make their money from tips.” I understand tipping culture — but double tipping without transparency is not acceptable.
When it was time for me to pay my bill, I was told that the $150 staffing fee had already been applied — and then I was charged the staffing fee again. I questioned this and was told it was “policy,” so I paid to avoid causing a scene. After reviewing my receipt later, I also noticed:
• The staffing fee was charged twice
• The cake fee was charged again
• An 18% gratuity was applied to the fees themselves, which makes no sense
I brought these concerns to Elena, who was apologetic and acknowledged that this is not how things should have gone. She also stated she was unaware of the automatic gratuity situation, which I appreciated her honesty.
Unfortunately, the situation worsened when the general manager, Nicole, called me. Instead of addressing the issues, she was dismissive, told me she didn’t understand why I was upset, and insisted her servers “don’t do that.” When I mentioned leaving an honest review of my experience, she said it was “unfair” for me to post online. The call was unprofessional and left a very sour final impression.
Final ratings:
• Elena: 10/10
• Environment: 10/10
• Food: 8.5/10
• Service: 6/10
• Management: 3/10
This had the potential to be a great experience, but poor communication, billing issues, and unprofessional management ultimately overshadowed what should have been a special evening.
Came here with my partner one Sunday in the late afternoon, which appeared to be a slow period for the restaurant. The decor looked somewhat tired and likely not a huge priority for management.
Our server was very friendly and welcoming. She provided a number of recommendations when I asked about the menu, and let me sample some beer before ordering. The pub has Guinness on tap (which is something I think a pub needs to have). We were told that the majority of the menu is made in-house from scratch. I ordered the Phez Burger while my partner had the Sunday special Roast Beef Dinner. The Roast Beef Dinner was decent, but didn’t stand out as exceptional. The Phez Burger was more impressive. The beef was cooked well (juicy) and the toppings had a good balance of the flavours. The Burger held together and did not fall apart. The fresh cut fries were quite exceptional and crispy – I ate every single fry. I would go back just for the fries
I think I’d recommend the Pheasant Plucker if you’re looking to hang out with friends for beers and decent grub, but it might not be the place you’d go for the ultimate culinary experience.
