I opted for the avocado toast topped with a perfectly poached egg, and bacon. The avocado toast was creamy and fresh, and the toast had just the right amount of crunch. The eggs benedict had a rich, velvety hollandaise sauce and bacon bits complemented the tender poached eggs perfectly.
First – the menu was prix fixed. Nowhere on their website was this mentioned, which I felt was a miss, but not a deal breaker. The number of offerings were good so we were hopeful. That’s pretty much where our optimism ended.
The Thorn really needs to up their service game. The person who we thought was our waiter when we were first seated was lifeless and almost timid. He took quite a while to even ask us if we wanted drinks. We ordered our drinks and 3-course meal at the same time. We were specifically asked to also give our dessert choices which we thought would bode well at the end of our meal. It did not.
Our first course took over a half hour to come out, and that was only after I asked the man at the hostess desk who also seemed to be doubling as a waiter for an eta. Our initial waiter was blind to us and not once through out the whole meal did he come over to check in, see if we needed more drinks, etc.
We also noticed that not much was coming out of the kitchen, and most of the tables had no food at them.
The appetizers were ok. Calamari, spinach pie, and Thorn chips (fried zucchini and eggplant). All were under seasoned, with no salt and pepper on the table. But we were so hungry at that point we went without and were somewhat satiated.
The main course came out relatively quickly but was so disappointing.
My braised short rib was so fatty and bland. My daughter had a taste and lost her appetite after her bite was a full layer of fat on top of the meat. Her gnocchi tasted like it was prepackaged and reheated. My husband’s shrimp pappardelle was the best dish but again, maybe all relative because the other 2 dishes were so bad.
At this point we were done. Annoyed and dissatisfied, hoping that maybe our desserts would redeem a bit of the meal. We asked for them to go along with the check. We had been there closing in on 2 hours and needed to get out of there and home to the dog (which I stated to the socially awkward waiter). This is where I thought the pre-choice of dessert item would benefit us. Nope. We were asked again what we wanted. There were 4 dessert items on the prix fixed menu so that would lead me to believe they are not making them one-off, that they should come out quickly. We waited another 20 minutes for the desserts.
After our experience I read a number of reviews stating slow service and under seasoned food. The restaurant responds with appreciation for the review and how they will use the feedback to better their customers’ experiences. Needless to say we will not be back to find out if this is in fact the case. We paid $320 for an evening of aggravation with subpar food and service.
I had a delicious 3 course meal, with a tasty mocktail. Husband said the beer/wine selection was also great. I highly recommend the smoky wings and lamb sliders! Considering the quality, the price is very reasonable. Ideal for those who want a romantic night out. There was also plenty of room for bigger groups. Will definitely be back!
My husband and I went there for dinner last night and it was excellent from start to finish. They had a special soup (carrot/ginger) and it was so good. My husband loved the salmon and I had the bucatini pasta which is now one of my favorite pasta dishes! We finished with baklava for dessert and that was delicious. They have a nice selection of cocktails too. Will definitely be going back and can’t wait to try their lunch menu.
ALLERGY ALERT- wait staff made several mistakes w/ order when asked to eliminate foods due to allergy.
I advise the owner to look into this I am sure this can be rectified
Ernesto was our server and he was extremely helpful, patient, and kind. He took his time to describe the off-menu specials and it was the first time in my life I actually ordered one of the off menu specials from any restaurant because he was really cool about explaining the dish to me.
Drinks came out immediately after ordering and the food did not take long, and was INSANELY delicious. I had the stuffed chicken breast special and my wife had the mushroom risotto.
We will be coming back! sorry there’s no pictures of the food I ate too fast lol.
Thank you again to Mario, Ernesto, and the rest of the staff at the Thorn for giving us a great experience with amazing food.
