The place is so charming and lovely from the outside as well as the inside. It’s historical and there’s much decorations and antique artifacts on the walls and decorating the Bakery. The floor is real hardwood floors and quite amazing. The place was so inviting and welcoming from the warmth during a cold wet autumn day, to the kind smiles of people’s faces and the ample amount of hot coffee you can buy for $1 with a coffee pitcher and a mug to use. There was plenty of sugar and creamers you can add to your coffee. The desserts baking in the back smelled so delicious! The donuts were only $1 or $1.25 a piece! There was plenty of seating. The restaurant owners the Father and daughter were very kind and cordial and I enjoyed talking with them about the town and their business. They gave my husband and I, some brochures on the town and other historical and tourist attractions to visit and my husband and I went on an amazing sight seeing adventure afterwards.

Oh my gosh! Their donuts are amazing! The Madison County Chamber of Commerce recommended we give this little gem a try for donuts & coffee. I’ve had apple fritters before, but none compare with the ones here. They say they use Red Delicious Apples, but I’m convinced there’s some magic in there, too. We also had a sugar cinnamon twist, birthday cake donut, glazed donut, a maple bacon bar, some dreamy lemony white chocolate donut, and something that looked like a Boston cream, but had marshmallow fluff inside. Seriously, we couldn’t decide what our 2nd favorite was!!! The Bakery Unlimited is family-owned and we were told that they use family recipes for their baked goods. They seem to sell out fast, so don’t dilly-dally!

Legitimately the best doughnuts I’ve had in the entire Midwest! Have and will continue to visit routinely. Staff are amazing, ingredients suffice even my picky gut, and the place is almost always as cozy as can be. I’d say more but honestly I don’t want to spoil it, if you’re thinking of coming here just do it and see for yourself! ^w^

Recently named one of the nation’s 10 Best bakeries, this is a must-visit spot whether you are visiting Winterset’s great public square, the nearby covered bridges, or the Wayne Birthplace. We visited from Ankeny, and loved it! Owner Jim Sparks is a terrific person, and this 40YO family business oozes kindness, customer service, and community. Their apple fritter was the BEST I have ever enjoyed. I loved all the photo history & family vibe. Plenty of seating. I loved that the business donates bread every Memorial day to their community.

The donuts and pastries here are like none other in a society that often takes shortcuts, and in doing so, quality often suffers.
The only reason for not awarding five stars is the birthday cake we recently ordered. It was beautifully decorated! However, the cake was extremely dehydrated when we attempted to enjoy it. It was most likely frozen at some point before being thawed and decorated.
Unfortunately, after bragging about the quality to everyone beforehand, the cake proved to be an embarrassment. My apologies for the negative experience; however, the cake had to be discarded.

Hands down the best apple fritter you will have… My work has me travel a good portion of western Iowa, and there are countless small towns with very good bakerys and I make sure to go to every one. But every time I try another shop it leads me back here to Winterset. You will never be disappointed! Everything is homemade by Jim and his daughter and you can tell… but be careful, a trip here will lead you to be disappointed by any other place you visit after lol!

They make it all from scratch and it tastes delicious! We had a great time chatting with the owners and I loved the story. Got some bread warm out of the oven! Well worth the drive from Johnston and I will be back. With friends!
