I was passing through Flagstaff and for the first time I saw there was a fully vegan restaurant there on HappyCow. Better yet, it was an all-you-can-eat Asian buffet?! I was pretty stoked. Unfortunately, despite a sandwich board advertising it right outside the door, I was immediately informed they don’t do the buffet anymore. So I ask about the combo meal I’m noticing on the menu handed to me. That, too, is no longer available, despite signage all around me advertising it. The gua bao on the menu and surrounding signage? Also not available. I was pretty bummed, needless to say, and just annoyed at the lack of accurate info online and even around the actual place.
So I settled on the Mongolian beef bowl. It somehow took almost 20 minutes to come out, and was even more puzzling when I realized that the rice and the beef must’ve been out for a while prior to being reheated for this meal. As I stirred everything together, I had to keep breaking apart large clumps of rice, which anyone who turns their leftover white rice into fried rice the next day knows, means it’s been out for a while. The beef was kinda stale and extra tough, I’m assuming it had been sitting in the buffet section tins now available for their hot pot offer. The flavors in my bowl were still excellent, and the portion was more than filling, but for $22 I should’ve at least eaten something fresh.
I dunno if I insulted the waitress with my visible frustration upon finding out neither the buffet nor the combo were available anymore, but she came to give me the check within five minutes of me eating my meal that took forever to come out.
I want this place to thrive. I want to know there’s a solid vegan place in Flagstaff. The man who co-owns it was talking a lot to another party dining and it seems he’s a very nice person. But despite the great reviews I’m reading here, this was my experience and it sucked.
I’m not vegan but wanted to try the new restaurant that just opened. I was so impressed by the food.
I got the orange chicken, beef banh mi, Mongolian beef and everything was so flavorful!
The owner and chef are also very kind. Absolutely worth trying even if you’re not vegan. 100% recommend!
