If you like traditional Philly cheese steaks one has to stop by the original creator of the iconic sandwich. Remember this is chopped steak, and know how to order BEFORE approaching the window. You can find the proper “procedure” on their website if you don’t know how to order or you’re not too sure.

Be aware… they’re kind of pricey. Don’t get me wrong, they’re about 12 inches, however for $18-19 EACH you’re genuinely paying for the name here.

These are your basic, classic no frills Philly Cheese Steaks.

Being the tourist I was when visiting Philly and having heard about these “rivals” I tried both Geno’s and Pats, to see which I thought was the best. I have to say I was sorely disappointed. Both are well below average Philly cheesesteak sandwiches that I have had throughout my life. If these are representatives of what the Philly cheesesteak sandwich should be like, then the city and state and all those that take any amount of pride that a sandwich has your name on it, should hold their heads in shame. Both Pat’s and Geno’s steak had no flavor, seemed steamed or boiled. Geno’s had very little cheese or onions and the bread was tough and chewy. Pat’s had good amount of cheese and onions. The bread was not tough or chewy. I do not recommend either, I would suggest finding the local favorite because my son had mentioned even before I went to Philly that people he knows that went to both said they were not good, but because I fell into the rivalry and wanted to see who I thought was better, I went any way. All I got out of it was now I can say I tried them both, if it ever comes up, and they both sucked. Save yourself time and money and pass.

The meat was sliced way too thick making it tough to eat. I prefer meat that is thinly sliced or chopped. You could hardly tell there was cheese on it and the roll tasted like it was burnt which completely ruined the taste of the entire cheese steak. They also do not provide complimentary cherry peppers like some other places do. I was not impressed with the “King of Steaks”. It was very disappointing and most likely the last time I eat there.

I’ve waited a very long time to try Pat’s Steaks. Unfortunately, the steak was not seasoned very much, if at all, and the cheese was not spread very well. It was mostly placed in the middle of the sandwich making the ends seem to be missing something. For $20 I’m sure people can find much better steaks.

The highlight was the speed of service and the representatives friendly demeanor.

I’m from Winston Salem, so this was my first time ever. I’ve never had an authentic Philly cheese steak, so had to check them out. Sandwich was ok, the service was fast and the crew was cool. It was early so we were the only ones there. I feel later in the day, this corner would be the place to be.

It took 55 years for me to get to Pats. And honestly I should have waited another 55 years. Hype is all it is. Ordered a cheesesteak with fried onions and cooper sharp- $18.
The cheesesteak was cold – cheese had zero chance of making it to the melting stage. The steak was DRY and tough (yes I have all my real teeth and can chew) the onions were mildly cooked – zero flavor overall. I will say the bread was good, About the only thing that was other than the people watching. If you must go just because of the mystique- then humor yourself. Just know it’s probably going to be one of the worst cheesesteaks you will eat. Sorry Philly! Not a fan. (Tried Gino’s same day-reviewed them as well)

Welcome to the cradle of liberty — Philadelphia ✨
A city bursting with history, culture, and… one of the most iconic food rivalries in America

The moment we arrived, we kicked off the ultimate Philly cheesesteak showdown — two legendary spots facing each other across the street
Geno’s Steaks vs Pat’s King of Steaks
Right in the heart of South Philly, both corners are filled with sizzling aromas, flashing neon lights, and hungry fans lining up for their favorite bite.

Pat’s King of Steaks
The original, old-school legend — where the cheesesteak was born!
They’re super generous with the beef, but the cheese sauce is thinner, making it taste more like a “steak sandwich” than a true “cheesesteak.”
If you’re a meat lover who prioritizes portion size over cheesiness, Pat’s will definitely hit the spot

If you come to Phildelphia, you have to visit Pat’s Steaks. They claim to be the place that invented cheesesteaks, although there is some controversy about that locally. They do have very good cheesesteaks, but probably not the best in the area. It all comes down to the roll. They have a nice chewy roll that is crusty on the outside. They have four types of cheese, but my favorite is melted cheese whiz. If you want to sound local you can order a cheesesteak with cheese whiz and onions as a cheesesteak whiz-wit.

Went to Philadelphia for the history and the cheesesteak. I expected something like this and it was a good cheesesteak don’t get me wrong, but turns out it was nothing out of the ordinary. The staff were as expected, not much but functional and very quick! The place was very empty during my time.
