We saw a sign as we entered the restaurant that it is Cashless/credit card only and that an 18% gratuity is added to all transactions. Okay, fair warning. Unfortunately, in this case, it became clear that the waiter knew he didn’t have to earn a tip. If we see that sign in future, we’ll remember that.
It took a long time for anyone to come take our order. A young waiter & an older man (manager?) were wandering around in a scattered kind of way. A uniformed hotel employee walked up to the bar to tell the older man there was a problem downstairs that needed his attention, and he told her he would get to it when he could. A woman came in from the outside seating and asked for something she needed for her meal. I casually mentioned to my husband that they seemed terribly disorganized, and he agreed. That’s when we should have left!
After awhile we got water and menus. We waited a long while for someone to take our order, and I finished my rather small glass of water.
When the waiter finally came, my husband ordered the burger & fries. I ordered a Cobb salad & loaded steak nachos. Again, we waited quite awhile for our food.
Someone set our food on the bar. The waiter picked up my husband’s plate and brought it over with a knife & fork, no napkin. He went back to the bar, left my food sitting on the bar & picked up an order of fries which he brought to a party near us who had been seated well after us. Okay, I thought, they have kids … let them eat first. The waiter went back to the bar, walked past my food and began fiddling with the microwave. The manager saw us looking over there, spoke to the waiter & indicated my food. The kid fiddled a bit more with the microwave before picking up my food to bring it to me. I asked, “Could I please have silverware, a napkin and more water?” My husband asked for a napkin, too. The manager ended up bringing me silverware wrapped in a napkin, refilled my water and brought paper napkins to my husband.
It was a good thing! My nachos were overly cooked with dark brown, slightly burned chips, not one shred of cheese, a pile of jalapeños and a bit of pico de gallo. I picked up a piece of steak which was so tough I could not chew or swallow it. Thank goodness for the paper napkins to spit it into! A few more bites were just as tough, so I gave up on the nachos.
The Cobb salad was okay—the hard boiled egg and avocado were good and the greens were fresh, as were the cherry tomatoes. Unfortunately, the chopped bacon was cold and congealed by the grease into unappetizing lumps.
There was no further contact with the waiter during our meal. When he saw we were done he came over to see if we wanted the check. I told him the nachos were inedible and asked to have them removed from the ticket. He agreed, but neither he nor the manager asked how they could make it right.
Then came the check—$41.25 for a salad and burger with fries! To add insult to injury, at the bottom of the bill was a note: “If you use a credit card we add a 3% surcharge to offset the processing costs.” My husband tried to leave cash, but both men refused saying they’re a cashless business! Whaaaat? “You must use a credit card, but IF you use a credit card we will charge you more???”
On the way out I let the ladies at the desk know how bad our experience was. They were very apologetic & asked how they could make it right. We appreciated their concern, but it was clear to us that this restaurant doesn’t care at all about their food, (and I wasn’t willing to subject myself to any more of it.) We thanked them for their concern and politely declined. On the way out I told my husband that if they were managing the restaurant, it would have been a different experience.
For the sake of those great women, I wish I could leave a better review. If things aren’t top notch at a restaurant, I give grace if I see that they care and they’re trying. But sadly, upstairs at the Skyline Bistro, no one seems to give a darn.
We arrived early as we had some business nearby. It was about 5:30 and we were the only customers for a while. I assumed that it would be busier later. But also there was not much activity on the playing fields so maybe that held down the crowds some. The manager went into a lot of detail about the specials. He mentioned the catfish and I immediately decided that was it. My wife ordered the salmon and we had a couple of drinks. And the atmosphere and scenery was quite enjoyable.
After a while, our server came out and told me that they were out of catfish. I was thinking that could not be possible as we were the only customers at the time. But she then said that the manager misunderstood what they had available. So I was thrown off a bit as I was looking forward to the catfish special. I couldn’t think of anything so I ordered the loaded fries. I added ground beef to it really make it a hearty selection. But I could only eat about 1/3 of it. The fries soon became mushy and while I do like spicy food, there were too many jalapeno peppers even for my taste. My wife thought the salmon was ok. Oh, and after a while, the manager came by to say there was a misunderstanding and that catfish is indeed available. But it was too late.
But the beer and wine was good and the atmosphere was great. Our server offered to remedy the situation by offering dessert, she described an apple pie and ice cream that sounded pretty good. But I was still slightly annoyed and said no thanks. But as I was paying, she brought me a boxed apple pie – with ice cream to go. OK, I appreciate the effort. We stopped at the nearby Starbucks where I ate the apple pie before the ice cream melted- and it was very good! Maybe she thought we were staying in the attached hotel. I didn’t mention that you have to go through the hotel lobby and take the elevator to the roof. But that wasn’t a big deal. Overall, we did enjoy the evening.
Food was absolutely on point and the beer was cold 🙂 We had a brussell sprout appetizer (it will shock you!) Nashville Hot chicken strips and Cajun chicken fettucini, and all of it was perfect!
My biggest gripe is the lack of quality of food. For such a nice space and the prices on the menu, I was expecting higher quality food. The mozzarella sticks and meatballs tasted like frozen foods from the store. The chicken tenders were the same – my kids didn’t like the Mac and Cheese either. The fries were undercooked.
The only decent items on the menu were the burger and fettuccine Alfredo.
My suggestion is to come here to grab cocktails but I wouldn’t eat dinner or lunch here again.
