Decent brisket and spare ribs. We did not care for the Mac and Cheese, but the quality of the brioche sandwich bun made up for that. Nice to sit outside and enjoy barbecue!
Pulled Pork Sami: Delicious and tender. The bbq sauces were good too. Best item for my lunch combo.
Chesapeake Potato Salad: Interesting idea, but not for me. I LOVE old bay, but this was a mediocre potato salad with a whisper of old bay. I’ll grab the mac and cheese next time.
Sweet Tea: Refreshing yet not too sweet. I’m used to country sweet tea and was expecting a sugar overload, but this sweet tea wasn’t overly sweet.
I dined here for the first time visiting Union station and I am thoroughly impressed! When I come up North to visit, I usually have a rough time finding a good food spot that’s closest to the southern food that I like. I must say that I was very impressed with this restaurant. The man that took my order was truly the sweetest person and was amazing! He was very accommodating to my order request and just had the utmost best customer service. I ordered The two meat special but chose double chicken because I don’t eat beef or pork. For the sides I ordered the mac and cheese, the bourbon beans, and it came with cornbread. The food was out of this world! I chose the Kansas City BBQ sauce and I believe the Texas barbecue sauce. It went perfectly with the chicken. It also came with coleslaw which was really good, especially since I usually don’t eat coleslaw. All of the good tasted good but my favorite item was the beans! I’ve never had beans that had peach in it and tasted so good. I wanted the recipe to this! I believe I received a great portion size for the amount of money that I paid. The wait time isn’t too long either. I would highly recommend trying this place If you’re looking for the closest thing to some real Southern BBQ!
I visited the Union Market location on 22 Dec, it took forever to order with 2/3 slow workers. When it was my turn I ordered the 2+2 BBQ Platter with the brisket and ribs and as you can see how little the portion were. Not to mention it was underwhelming and I am not even from the US but I have had much better BBQ in other countries.
The biggest issue is they have scammed me with unauthorized 30% tips, making my transaction $25.5 when the lady at the counter has confirmed the price is $22 instead. When I was in line, I have seen her using her phone as a tap machine and it is all in Spanish so no one knew what she had done. I specifically confirmed the price before I tapped and yet I checked my bank account the next day and found out they have charged me 30% more. I have left DC so I could not go back, I find it deceiving and frustrating even $3.5 doesn’t sound like a lot. If she would have asked for a tip with different options in English, I would have had no problem tipping. If you unfortunately have visited them, CHECK YOUR CARD especially as a tourist.
Update: I called and the owner refunded the unauthorized tips so I do appreciate it. He mentioned it was not intentional which I doubt, the lady asked the person in front for tips (despite the instructions on the phone were all in Spanish) so why did she suddenly forget to ask me, confirmed the total amount with me and then charge the tips later on?
The meats, sliced brisket and pulled pork, were a disappointment. The kind of bbq’ed meat that needs a sauce to make it moist. The lean brisket was closer to smoky corned beef in taste and texture, though the fatty cut was passable. Pulled pork pretty bland and dry as well.
I’m sure the original restaurant is top, but when the meats arent smoked on premise, the experience takes a real hit.
