I’ve had Pizza Matta on my list for a while now after seeing fox’s review on instagram, it looked phenomenal. I had to make my way up there and check it out for myself. We ordered the 16 inch tavern style cheese pizza. I had my queen with me and she’s a vegetarian so we went with cheese, but you have the option to do half-and-half. The pizza was on point came out piping, hot, nice and thin. Their dough is amazing it stayed crispy throughout the whole dining experience. The quality of dough and flavors are exquisite and they cooked it perfectly with just right char on the bottom, you could also from the taste you can tell they use really good quality cheese. The sauce was nice and acidic the way I like it, only feedback I have is just need to add a little more sauce. They also offer side condiments like hot honey and chili oil. The chili oil was amazing even the quality of their Parmesan is . The young lady that helped us at the register was very helpful and patient great customer service felt like she was happy that we were there trying their pizza. The location is little store front on Armitage with three tables with bench seats counter/register where you can get slices and an opening to see the guys making pizzas. It’s really cool little spot. I love the ambience with the pizza peels hanging on the wall. Parking was real easy. Lots of street parking. They also have pay for parking in front of the restaurant. I will definitely be back to try their specialty pizza that they offer.100% Recommend!!

I’ve had tavern style pizza from north to south in the Chicago area (Barnabys to Vito’s) and many in between (Pats, Dagostino). And even the far northern suburb of Milwaukee (zaffiros is great!). Each of those is very good or great. But Matta is the best I’ve had. Ever. The crust was extraordinary. The meats are from Slagel and I give them huge credit to buy local and humane meat, which is all I will eat (humane—don’t know about ezzos so I won’t do that one.) I went off menu for the tavern pizza and got a Lucki Leopard that has Italian sausage, roasted red peppers and red onion with “presto” combo sauce. Amazing!
The New York style was 5 star worthy itself. We got a few slices of that and it was far superior to our neighborhood version which shall remain nameless. Overall just so impressed and satisfied!

Tried Pizza Matta for the first time tonight. Excellent cheese blend, a satisfying butter crust (not overly buttery like Lou’s!) and a delightful crunch. The tavern style needs more sauce than how it comes standard, so I’d definitely order with extra sauce next time. Overall satisfying experience with Pizza Matta!

I really hate how people have started to use the made up term “tavern style” to mean thin crust- it was not a thing till recently and does not exist in the literary record until recently and the lore behind it is idiotic. But what really bothers me about “tavern style” is that it doesn’t even always mean thin crust, it increasingly means St. Louis style cracker crust pizza which is what you should expect at pizza Matta when you order “tavern style” pizza.

I have been many times, the first time I went shortly after they opened was by far the best but I feel like something changed and now the pizzas are nothing special, mildly inconsistent and always kinda doughy but still better and cheaper than both Dante’s and bungalow which are down the street. Friendly staff and cool seating area.

Wings are fatty and gross and the cheesy garlic bread isn’t very good either, overly greasy and the cheese was always hard whenever I got it, I used to live on armitage/albany so it wasn’t a delivery or transport issue

We had high expectations since all the reviews we’d read had been very positive. We were not disappointed. The apple salad was indeed huge and delicious and the tavern style pizza was perfect. Super thin and crispy and the sausage was glorious, not greasy at all and full of fennel seed flavor. Josh(one of the owners)took our order and chatted with us. He was extremely welcoming and kind. Even brought us glasses for the bottle of wine we brought with us. We also tried the Superman ice cream, which I hadn’t heard of before, that too is made in house and was delicious. There are 3 booths that fit 4 for seating and also just enough room for ordering at the counter and for people waiting for takeout and delivery orders. We went on Friday and were able to grab a table when we arrived around 5:30. Within 30-45 minutes, the other tables were occupied as well. We dined in since we wanted to try the pizza super fresh and hot. Wonderful experience and We’re looking forward to going again. Don’t miss out on this amazing pizza.

This is an updated review. The pizza here is really good. I have only had delivery. I ordered tavern thin. I imagine the pizza is a lot better straight out of the kitchen but I haven’t dined in. I believe the delivery is a third party. I usually try to avoid places that only offer third party delivery for two main reasons. One: I prefer the delivery money goes to a small business or individual and not a large corporation like Uber or Door Dash. Two: a person who works at the restaurant is more likely to care about the product and take steps to insure the quality of the product being delivered. But I’m getting off topic. If you like “Chicago style” thin crust pizza they have a very solid offering.

DISCLAIMER: FOOD IS 5 STARS.
The pizza rocked. Kudos to the guy who reviewed it and mentioned some top notch places and said it was on par if not better. He was right.

We got the tavern style, with giardiniera and sausage. Be careful with the hot giardiniera. It’s legit hot. The crust was crispy, slightly charred, and there wasn’t an excess amount of cheese or sauce. Everything was in good balance. I wish I took pictures, but it was so good. The pizza was delicious, thin, and all the amazingness of Chicago style tavern.

Also, good bang for your buck! I think we didn’t realize how big the pizzas were for the price! $22 base price and with toppings, roughly $30 per pie…I can’t recall the exact size, but it could easily feed 2-3 hungry people (depending on how much you eat ).

The ricotta donuts were FIRE. Get them. Even after the longer than necessary delivery time, They were still soft, warm, and delicious.

DELIVERY DETAILS DROP UBER
We’ll have to dine next time in as Uber is the worst delivery service. They harass their workers into bad service and are pretending that deliveries like that would be taxed heavily (which… It wouldn’t. They’re liars). First, the guy panic blamed me for the wrong address, then realized I didn’t make that mistake, and rushed over. Then, he took a picture of my husband picking it up because Uber DEMANDS IT. He didn’t ask. That’s on Uber. Not on the guy they pay nothing to get deliveries done in short windows with odd requirements (which, plenty other delivery services have much better systems).

I kept seeing this spot after passing by so many times filled with people so I had to try! It’s a small space so not too much seating for dine-in but it’s a vibe inside! The pizza slice was large and very thin crust but chewy in a good way! The cheese bread had a lot of tasty garlic and went so well with their marinara sauce! Lots of people were there getting take out too.

Amazing pizza! I always pass by here and finally decided to try it and it’s hands down really good. They also have sodas that are made locally in Chicago which also are great! I tried the veggie slice and the sausage and tomatoes. Both amazing

Even though I live less than a half mile away, I am still much closer to Pizza Lobo and Paulie Gee’s and I pick Pizza Matta Every. Time. I’ll order a pie for delivery or walk in and grab a slice. If you want a no frills cheese or pepperoni pizza, this is the spot. If you want a more complex pizza with fancy toppings, this is the spot. If you’ve eaten at Giant, you know the care that goes into the food and this is the perfect extension of that operation. I will be a regular for as long as I’m a Logan resident (and beyond if I can’t find another pizza as good).
