We LOVED the amazing options for vegetarians! Different lentil dishes, some spicy, some not. There was a cabbage dish, a beet dish, and salad that was dressed to perfection. The bread was a lovely sponge texture that held up for picking up food, but was still so soft to eat. Loved the variety of flavors and spice (or mild) in this plate! Lovely music and friendly staff! If you’re looking for a vegetarian or vegan meal, it’s amazing!

I went a second time, and unlike my first visit, the experience was much better. The service improved, and the fresh meat on Thursdays was a highlight. Based on this visit, I’m increasing my rating and would now recommend giving it a try!

Absolutely delicious — every dish was flavorful, authentic, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. The restaurant has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for spending time with family or even enjoying a meal by yourself. I’d come back just for the food! My experience at Abay Ethiopian Restaurant & Bar in Tukwila was frustrating from start to finish. My friend ordered the dorowot plate over the phone, and we were told it would be ready in 30 minutes. When I arrived about 40 minutes later, they informed me they were out of dorowot and claimed they had tried to call us back – though we never received any call. I ended up ordering the meat and veggie combo instead, which was advertised at $28.
When it came time to pay, I only found out after the transaction that they had actually overcharged me $40 for this plate, which was a shock. The portion itself was disappointing – it was packed with injera, making up most of the plate’s weight, and had hardly any meat or veggies. To make it worse, the food tasted stale, And you can tell the food was not fresh, like they gave us the end of the night, bottom of the barrel scraps!
I also sat at the bar, where I ordered a whiskey and a beer, but after receiving my drinks, the bartender never returned, leaving me waiting another 25 minutes in a very loud environment. On top of that, I felt uncomfortable due to the cold mean stares from other patrons at the bar, something I’m not used to experiencing with other African brothers. Even the white family seated near the window by the entrance looked uneasy, likely having wandered in as travelers given the restaurant’s proximity to the airport.
Being an African American man, i was very disappointed because Ethiopian food is some of the best cuisine in the world, and it’s a shame this place misses the mark with poor service and a lack of desire to include outsiders. To my Ethiopian brothers and sisters: let’s do better, and create a space where everyone feels welcome.

Food: Flavor was good. The beef was chewy but the chicken was tender.
Service: Expect some wait time. Charged us for a drink we didn’t order but oh well.
Price: Expensive. There’s a $2 charge to pay with a card but the waitress didn’t ask us if we’d be paying with cash or card. It was $45 for the large beef and vegetable combo. So it was $70 with tax and tip for the combo dish and 2 coke cans.

Like the river nile, This Abay restaurant delivers an amazing experience from start to finish. The vegetarian options were outstanding, full of flavor, hearty, and clearly made with love. The misir wot (spicy lentils), gomen (collard greens), and shiro were so good, I almost forgot to share!
The atmosphere was cozy, welcoming, and full of cultural charm. Traditional music played softly in the background, and the decor transported us straight to Ethiopia. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed meal with friends or a cozy date night.
To top it all off, we ended our meal with the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. The coffee was rich, aromatic, and served with etan (incense), which added such a beautiful and calming touch to the experience. You can really feel the hospitality and heart in every detail here.
Highly recommend. I’ll definitely be back (probably tomorrow )

I really enjoyed my visit to Abay Restaurant. The food was delicious and full of authentic Ethiopian flavor — especially the doro wat and tibs. The injera was soft, fresh, and perfect for sharing. The staff were very kind and welcoming, and the service was quick. The place was clean and had a warm, home-like feeling. The prices were fair for the amount of food you get. I’ll definitely come back again and recommend Abay to anyone who wants to experience real Ethiopian food!

What an incredible culinary journey! I’ve never had authentic Ethiopian food before and I am happy to say that I love it! I was recommended to try this place by a nearby coffee shop barista and I couldn’t be more happy. Friendly service, simple and straightforward menu, and short wait times!
The waiter recommended the veggie and meat platter and it was the perfect intro for somebody who’s never eaten here! The only thing I wish this place had was somebody to sit down and eat this food with me! I was on a solo trip for work and the serving sizes here are MASSIVE definitely recommend splitting a platter.

My husband and I split the large vegetarian combo ($35), which we highly recommend! It was enough food to fill us up even when we were very hungry. Best Ethiopian restaurant in the area. The food took a bit to come out but it seemed fresh so it was worth the wait.
