Masa Hattori, chef owner of Sushiland East, came to Santa Fe 20 years ago. He opened his own sushi restaurant, Sushiland East, in 2010. With his warm casual personality, he made this small restaurant into such a cozy relaxing place serving delightful Japanese food. He is a proud father of two daughter, Shino (left) and Mako (center). Do not forget to check out his Omakase, seasonal special menu items. He loves serving new dish.
Snug sushi spot for clever maki, including an omakase option, plus bento & Japanese kitchen entrees.

Had lunch here, and it was much better than we had anticipated. Courteous and helpful staff with very tasty food. The seaweed salad and spicy eggplant are both great appetizers. Eel is awesome.

Waiter is underwhelming, but simple authentic sushi is very well done. Got the omakase (traditional) a couple weeks ago and I’m already planning my next trip.

I go here often with a Japanese friend, (I lived there 20 years). Sushi Land East is an excellent place with delicious food and the prices are almost cheap, esp. compared to another Japanese restaurant in Santa Fe which shall remain unnamed. Yes, it gets busy and yes they have some issues with the wait staff now and then, but we think it’s charming. Someone complained about the menu being handwritten. Take negative reviews with a large grain of salt. They often say more about the reviewer than they do about the place being reviewed !

Hands down the best sushi place we have ever eaten at, and we eat sushi everywhere we go. Even the “basic” rolls are fantastic and carefully prepared with great care and detail. Small menu, but that enhances the experience. Masa hand prepared the ninja ice cream special for our 4 year old just out of the goodness of his heart. It made our 4 year olds evening. Good atmosphere, better food. Get to this place now.

A small but elegant dining room, with one singly tatami-style table for larger parties. I love the tempura-udon soup bowls! The the service a bit slow because it only has one waiter, but the food is outstanding. The owner of this place does have a tendency to close for business on a whim, so it might be a good idea to check to make sure he will be open on the day you plan to go.

Great, authentic Japanese food with friendly service and good decor. Intimate dining area, tatami mat floor and sushi bar. Excellent vegetarian and vegan options. Masa is very accommodating to other dietary needs as well. Too much fun! Too good! My favorite Japanese restaurant in town, hands down… You won’t be sad if you eat here. Thumbs up!

It’s in Santa Fe so you can’t expect much in the way of sushi or Japanese food. However, the senior chef and his staff were super friendly and accommodating to my wife and I as we dined for dinner one Thursday evening. The quality of the sushi was mediocre at best. The Sushi rice was not well made and didn’t stick together as it should have. Interestingly they did have natto while we were there but I decided not to indulge. They were out of the baby octopus appetizer which is one of my usual favorites.
We had a couple rolls and some nigiri Sushi in addition to some appetizers of shrimp tempura and seaweed salad which were both tasty. The rolls fell apart while trying to eat them as did the nigiri Sushi. It was sub-par but still a pleasant experience with the friendly staff.
Disclaimer. I’m from the Detroit area where there is a large Japanese population due to the auto industry and the sushi and Japanese food there is very good to excellent if you know where to go.

Hands down the best sushi in New Mexico! It is small, cozy, and friendly, not to mention the owner chef, Masa-san, makes awesome omakase dishes. It does take little longer than other places because the chef does the most and checks all the dishes that comes out. It is totally worth the wait.
There are also fish that other places do not have if you read carefully at the fish selections. Highly recommended!!!

I guess it was OK. The chef is extremely nice and seems to want to make sure the customers are well taken care of. The waitress was one of the most clueless I’ve come across at a sushi restaurant and the bar for cluelessness in that category is pretty high. Nigiri seems a bit overpriced and nothing seemed all that fresh, but we were there on a Monday. Maybe we should have gone with the omakase.
Note to owner/chef: Please consider contacting Santa Fe Community College culinary program to see if they can recommend potential waitstaff candidates with a real interest in food who might want to work for you. You need people willing to learn about Japanese food and service and who have some basic knowledge of fish and shellfish. Your waitress did not even know what soft-shell crab was and kept saying ‘there are only two kinds of crab–fresh crab and not fresh crab.’
