I had a really bad experience at this bar last month. One of the female bartenders did something really unfair, racist and mean. She took my ID and didn’t give it back until I left. But here’s the worst part: she didn’t ask for IDs from any other white people at the bar. It was clear she was treating me differently because of my race.
When I tried to order some drinks, she acted like she couldn’t hear me or understand me. But she had no problem serving white customers who came in later than me while i was talking. It felt really unfair and hurtful.
It’s not right to be treated like this because of your race, and I hope the bar does something about it. Discrimination is never okay, and it ruined what should have been a fun night out. I won’t be going back to this bar, and I hope others think twice about going there too.

Laid back bar with fantastic specials! Locals and ISU’ers drink together as friends with good drinks and great service! This place has been an ISU tradition and should not be missed. Wonderful smiles from the bartenders and they know how to pour! Grab a drink after class and unwind or shoot a game of pool. One of Ames hidden jewels. Patio outside for the nicer months. Always remember it’s Thumbs up!

I’m convinced Thumbs is one of the 7 wonders of the world. The atmosphere is tops, the people are incredible, and the drinks are delicious. There’s no shot they can’t make. The prices are more than fair. Not to mention the bartenders enhance your experience that much more. If you’re looking for a quaint dive, this is the spot! Some of my favorite memories were made in these walls<3

One of the best bars in Ames. Visited again after 35 years and other than the new bar top and cleaned up bath rooms, it is basically the same. I will be back for as long as it is open. Just a great small tavern.

A great local bar. Even though it is located by campus most of the patrons are Ames residence. They have great deals every night of the week. They also have an outdoor patio you can smoke on if that’s your jam. There is even a grill outside that you can use.

Definite a dive bar. Go early for a low-key drink with locals. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. One of the hidden gems for those that like a quick drink between afternoon classes.
