Located in the heart of downtown Los Gatos we are a cozy French restaurant offering beautiful but approachable cuisine, wine, and champagne.

We had a nice meal here on a fairly quiet Saturday evening. The starters took quite a long time to arrive; when they did, the stuffed dates were great and the Laitue salad nice, but its dressing was a little over-vinegary. The burger (and its fries) was wonderful, but our duck confit was rather dry.

We indulged in four French wines by the glass, all of which were wonderful, if a tad expensive.

Service was super friendly, and the ambience is lovely: an old brick building, with a great tall window frontage.

We’d return if we were in the neighborhood, but probably won’t make a special trip down there again (we live in mid-Peninsula).

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this charming French bistro and champagne bar, and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. The cozy atmosphere is perfect for an intimate dinner or a fun evening with friends, and the adorable little patio area adds to its appeal. The food is outstanding—each dish beautifully crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients—and paired perfectly with an impressive selection of champagne and wine. The service is beyond friendly, making you feel right at home.

Since taking over two years ago, the new owners, D’Avonny and Adam, have truly transformed this place into a gem. Their attention to detail and warm hospitality shines through in every aspect. Whether you’re looking for a lovely night out or a venue for a future event, this bistro is an excellent choice. Highly recommend!

Great food in a charming French atmosphere. I had the brunch special which was a short rib beef bourguignon over crispy fries. It’s definitely a unique dish and the crispy fries and savory stew were a perfect combo. The restaurant itself has a lot of natural light for a good ambience, as well as a clean, gender neutral restroom.

Had seen this place in my Yelp researches but I’m not a huge fan of French food. A friend then recommended it to us and so we thought we’d give it a try. Although the food is rich (obviously knew that being it’s French food) it was really good. The restaurant is super cute. Great for a girls night, date night, family night; this ambiance is very accommodating.

The food was all very tasty and is made of very good quality. We ordered three cocktails, and the three of us shared a salad, soup (solo for the hubby), a dozen oysters, bread service (our waiter gave us extra), steak tartare, two entrees (duck confit and salmon), one coffee and shared beignets for dessert; the total was $300 after tip and tax. Not bad for a fancy dinner in Los Gatos.

Our server was Charles and he was very attentive. The food arrived in a timely manner and he cleared the dishes fast, always checking in on us in-between.

Parking was easy. Lots of street parking but there are also nearby lots that require a short walk.

Would definitely go back.

The best restaurant I’ve been to in years, and the service was so excellent, my friend and I felt as though we’d been invited to a friend’s home. Excellent French onion soup, amazing beignets w salted caramel sauce. Truly, a memorable experience!

UPDATE: My wife and I finally made it back to Epernay for dinner. Our expectations were high after having a good experience at brunch. But dinner is the real test of a restaurant like this and I’m sad to say that we were disappointed.

We ordered a couple of classic French bistro dishes: poulet roti and steak frites. The chicken (served with pureed potatoes and broccolini) was ok according to my wife. Although I ordered my steak medium rare, it arrived well done. It was cooked properly after our server replaced it, but the steak was still much too thin, fatty, and gristly to command a $42 price tag. Paper-thin ribeye isn’t typical for this dish, so a different cut of meat might have made a difference. Ending on a positive note, at least the beignets (served with warm caramel syrup) were just right for dessert.

Service was ok, but not exceptional given that the restaurant was less than half full.

I was hoping to raise my rating from four to five stars. But based on our dinner, I’m lowering it to three stars (i.e. “average”). To be fair, Epernay has only been open for a couple of months so we’ll give them another chance sometime soon.

ORIGINAL REVIEW 6/1/2021: This cute little French Bistro is a terrific addition to the downtown Los Gatos dining scene.

We reserved a table for Saturday brunch and were seated promptly on their outdoor patio. I liked their take on a classic BLT, served on a croissant. My wife had Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon which she really enjoyed too. We shared a side order of perfectly cooked pomme frites. Food was priced fairly given the quality of ingredients. We lingered over a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc which we thought was a good value too.

We didn’t have a chance to meet the chef/owner Ty, (who’s also a sommelier) but it turns out that our very helpful server, Katie, is his girlfriend. Service always seems to be better when its all in the “family”.

It takes quite a lot to earn a five star review from me since it implies that there’s no room for improvement. A handful of wines priced for everyday drinking is at the top of my wish list. French press coffee would be a nice addition, especially at brunch. And it would have been helpful to know what’s on the chalkboard menu (visible only to inside diners.)

Epernay Bistro is located in the historic Beckwith Block at the former site of Billy’s Boston Chowder House. It’s small, so reservations are recommended. We’ll definitely be back for dinner, so stay tuned for an update.

Having been to many French restaurants, I would rate Epernay as average. The food was decent, but not exceptional. The steak tartare was one note with the capers being the strongest flavor, I’m used to a little more spice and a finer ground of meat. The potatoes from Beef Bourgongne were very firm, flavor was nice, beef more dry than juicy. Vegetable risotto could have had some visible vegetables and herbs added, pretty bland. The baked oysters and French onion soup were very good.

First impression is not great.
I called in to order take out. I was told to stay on
hold. I stayed on for 10 mins and still nothing.
I decided to hang up and called back.
Twice, the phone went to voicemail.
I guess this restaurant has more business than it can handle. Good for them.
