Update: I went back and it’s still good! I was even able to get a lot of red salsa.
Another update: a year later (9/5/23). I visited this place for the last time yesterday. I literally have always enjoyed their red salsa and always rave about it. It’s literally what’s saves their food. I ordered steak, chicken, pork, and chorizo tacos. I also tried a sope. It was okay, juicy cause I squirted 1/4 of the bottle of salsa on it. The meat was over cooked, dry and hard. They told me that ‘ran out of red salsa’ which I don’t believe to be true because when you sit down and eat at the restaurant you get a bottle of each salsa. I asked for a bottle and they told me they were completely out – although it was 2 hours until closing and there was literally bottles of salsa on the table. I paid for extra onions and cilantro— which I was not given. There was one lady in particular that seemed to not want to serve me at all and she was directing the other lady on what to say. The individuals true to their culture didn’t seem to have any issues with their food and I could see the juice dripping off while being served their food. So why was mine so dry and 65% inedible? I will keep my original reviews up because at one point I truly did enjoy the food. But after yesterday, I will no longer return, unless I can buy the salsa by itself because the tacos are no longer it for me.
Edit** went today and it didn’t really hit like the first time I posted this review. also the sauces they been giving me are half filled sauces saying that’s the portion. They also say they don’t give sauce with entomatadas but I’ve always got them with sauce before. I think it’s just excuses sad to say this place is going downhill maybe new owners. Today was my last time going.
They’re very generous with their portions. If you’re looking to eat good just come here but if you’re looking for “aesthetics” go else where.
You order at the counter and can either take away or stay in the small eating area. No chips and salsa, no soda fountain, no silverware: it’s very bare-bones and mostly patronized by construction workers on a Monday.
I ordered chilaquiles, my favorite dish ever and one that’s often done pretty badly. Kids got a cheese quesadilla and steak tacos.
Quesadilla was plain (as expected) but made with oaxacan cheese and a great tortilla. Steak tacos were EXCELLENT with flavorful and plentiful meat, crisp onions and cilantro, and served with limes and tasty homemade hot sauces that were actually HOT! Chilaquiles were EXCELLENT with a homemade sauce (not just salsa or enchilada sauce!), nicely cooked eggs, and the right amount of cheese on top. Bonus, the refried beans here are made with black beans and are perfectly seasoned.
Super impressed and can’t wait to go back for the weekend menu items. We saw several people order tlayudas which well also try soon.
