Arturo was our host and seemingly the mayor! He what’s full of personality which represented well this beautiful restaurant that we will definitely come back and visit often.
It was a lovely experience! We’re very thankful to the proprietors who brought this experience to toco hills. So authentic and so appreciated!
The space itself is interesting. Lots of fixed intimate tables, with a lot of group tables. Since we didn’t have a reservation, we were seated at a 6 person high-top. Thankfully, no one else joined us at the table as we were exhausted from what we’d worked on that day and just wanted a quiet night and food at a new Toco Hill(s) place.
We ordered-
Patatas Bravas
Gambas al Ajillo
Spanish Style Mac + Cheese
Manchego stuffed Dates wrapped with Bacon
Paella for 2
Everything came out super greasy. I accept that the Mac and dates will be a little greasy, but not drenched in it. The Gambas and Paella suffered from the same problem. The paella was the worst offender because it was clear it was assembled and not made to order like it should be. Oddly, the patatas were the cleanest thing we had outside of the water.
Service is very much a communal thing. When your order comes up in the kitchen, it is swiftly delivered by whomever is available.
However, this means you may find yourself running short of water in the small cups they provide. To eliminate this, I’d recommend just giving each table a reasonably sized carafe of water; like a lot of tapas places in Spain do.
Outside of the water, food was delivered as it came out. No issue there.
Overall, we had a pleasant experience. We likely won’t be back as it’s surprisingly mid for the price, and it seems a bit out of character for a neighborhood spot. If I go back, I’ll be sure to wear a collared button-up shirt and a jacket. It seems fitting for the scene, but not so much for the food.
My 2 cents.
