We drove down from Savannah for a show at the Florida Theater and decided on dinner before the show at Keane’s, given its good reviews and proximity to the theater. It’s new and has so much potential. The renovations from whatever it was previously are really nice. The bathrooms were very clean and all easily accessible. We loved sitting against the green velvet wall. Super comfy with plenty of TVs to watch. The music and overall vibe were great. They have a nice stage area in the back, and I’m sure live music would be great to catch there.

Hunter was the bartender and overall handled everything, aside from cooking. We tried the Reuben rolls, the Scotch eggs, and the Celtic chips with cheese and bacon. Everything was SO good! I loved the tomato chutney with the Scotch eggs. I would say the Scotch eggs are the second best I’ve ever found in the country! The crust was moist and delicious, and again, the chutney was amazing with them.

We tried a couple of Draught & Drams and then some beers. The Guinness was poured perfectly. They have a great selection of Irish whiskeys, which I appreciate. While we didn’t get to try any cocktails, they have some good-sounding ones!

Overall, it was such a great experience that we came back after the show to sit at the bar to watch the College Football Championship. Again, great service and great beers! We enjoyed talking to Hunter at the bar and getting to know him as well as striking up a conversation with some other new visitors. The sound system in there was perfect while we all watched the game.

As they grow, a waitress would be ideal to give Hunter some support. If we needed anything, we only had to ask, and Hunter promptly provided it. It’s a great location with so much potential as the city refines that area. Highly recommend you try it out! We will definitely go back anytime we are in Jacksonville, which will be often now that we know The Florida Theater is such a great venue, and it’s only a couple of hours away from us in Savannah.

This place is great not just for drinks but to eat too! They’re always showing games on the TVs and both their bar and dining seating is very cozy! They have live music as well. Their menu rotates and they have an award winning chef that throws it DOWN in the kitchen! If you’re needing a bite to eat before being out all night at Decca next door, def stop here for some yummy bites!

We were downtown for a show of a Friday night so we tried Keane’s Tavern for dinner. They’re on Bay Street right between Market & Liberty Street. We’ve been to Keane’s a few times previously but mostly for drinks. I say “mostly” because we did split a preztel once which, quite frankly was one of the best pub pretzels we’ve had in a while.

We started with Reuben Rolls, which are exactly what you’re expecting. They were fine on their own but both of us were surprised by how much we liked the 1,000 Island on the side. I’m no expert but my wife seemed pretty sure they must make it there because it just seemed better than the average side sauce/dressing.

I went with Fish & Chips, which there was a lot of pros to and one minor con. Pros were that there were big portions and the seasoning on the breading was great. Another pro is that the parts of the batter that were cripsy were REALLY crispy but that leads into the one con. The con was that a little under half of the batter was pretty soggy as soon as it was delivered to the table. Not the end of the world but the crispy parts were seasoned well and so good that I wished more of it was that way.

My wife ordered the Tavern Tenders. She mentioned the chicken itself being really good several times. Another thing she kept talking about was similar to the dressing from the appetizer. She said she really thinks the tenders are made in house, just based on how they were breaded, seasoned and tasted to her. There was enough that she ended up full and took some with her. That’s a pretty good endorsement as chicken tenders aren’t usually the type of thing she’ll pack up to go.

The fries for of our meals deserve their own mention, IMO. They were both seasoned differently based on our respective meals. Maybe I’m making too much of this, but I can’t remember the last time we went anywhere that did that. Her fries had a standard (not bad!) seasoning that you’d expect on fries with tenders. My fries had a unique, more buttery seasoning on them because they were with fish & chips. Again, maybe I’m making something out of nothing but I just thought that was a really unique thing and worth a mention.

Per usual, she had a house cab to drink. I had the Keane’s Old Fashioned, which I’d had on each of our previous visits. So nothing new to report there.

I’m glad my wife suggested we stop in here for dinner. It’s in a great location, it’s a cool place and they have a nice little menu. Defintely worth a stop in with more and more reasons to be downtown these days. This review originally appeared in the Jacksonville Fun, Eats & Drinks Facebook group.

Keane’s was a pleasant surprise. Emerald gimlet is refreshing and tasty. The pretzel was the best one I’ve had is a while. Definitely pop in for a drink and pub grub when you’re downtown.

Came to Keanes Tavern with my girlfriend during this cold weather and it was the perfect cozy escape. Such a wonderful, calm vibe inside. Food was delicious, drinks were great, and Hunter absolutely crushed it — efficient, attentive, and on top of everything. Definitely a spot we’ll be back to.

This is my new favorite bar. They have great happy hour specials, the service is top-tier. They have a jukebox so you can play your own music, it is very lively at night, and A great dinner spot in the evening. Plus, Friday and Saturday nights there is always live music, which is a big hit for me. Not to mention how amazing the food is, every item I’ve had from that kitchen is phenomenal
