Now, the tortillas. They only served two medium flour tortillas, and they were pretty tough and chewy. It took some effort to pull them apart, and I actually had to cut through them with a knife, which is a first for me at any Mexican restaurant. They will bring you more if you ask, so portions aren’t the issue. The texture is what threw me off, and it makes me think they aren’t homemade. Fresh tortillas should tear clean and melt in your mouth. These didn’t. It didn’t ruin the meal, but it definitely stood out.
I also ordered Chiles Toreados, and these were cooked way past the sweet spot. They were completely black and super crispy, which takes away the heat from the seeds and loses that fresh green jalapeño flavor. Still tasty, but overdone for my preference.
For drinks, I had a 22 oz. Dos Equis and a 32 oz. margarita. Their margarita mix is really good, but the drink had almost no tequila flavor at all. I ended up ordering a separate shot $11.99 just to balance it out, which pushed a $13.99 margarita up to around twenty six bucks. Once the tequila was added it tasted great, but a margarita that size should have a noticeable tequila presence from the start.
Their salsa has good flavor, but it could be even better with more cilantro. It has the right base, just needs that extra fresh kick.
The sides were solid. Beans, rice, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream—all served separately and nicely portioned. Everything came out hot and plentiful. Service was excellent. My server was friendly, attentive, and easy to communicate with.
Overall, I had a really good meal. The fajitas themselves were fantastic and the portion size is no joke. The tortillas were the only real disappointment, along with the underpowered margarita. The salsa could use more cilantro, but the base flavor is already good. The Chiles Toreados were over-roasted but still enjoyable. For the most part, Don Buyos delivered a satisfying dinner, big portions, great service, and a comfortable vibe. With fresher tortillas and a stronger tequila pour, this place would level up fast.
The most attentive service that I have ever had at any restaurant.
The atmosphere is clean and fresh
The food is very fresh, and the guacamole is 5 stars. The portions are more that you would expect.
And the prices are far less than you would expect for the quality and quantity of food that you receive.
Yall, the bathrooms are immaculate.
This is not your standard “ Mexican Restaurant “.
I rarely leave reviews of restaurants. But, this place earned every star that I can give.
The interior has been nicely refurbished and features art that’s modern and appealing.
Complimentary chips and salsa were quickly brought to our table – the chips were average, the salsa a tad above average. A free salsa bar was present and appreciated, although I didn’t care for some of the selections, which had an unwelcome sweet mayonnaise-like taste. The Roja packed a nice spicy punch. The Tomatillo was flavorful but too thin.
Vegetarian choices were sufficient but not innovative in any way. While my cheese enchilada was a bit above average, the chalupa tasted exactly like every other chalupa consumed since the dawn of time. The beans and rice were uninspired.
Service lacked personality but was efficient and courteous.
All in all, Don Buyo’s is a major improvement over the clueless Fatz.
The staff was friendly and attentive; the restaurant was neat and clean; the food is reasonably priced; and we all enjoyed our meals. All three of us agreed that we will definitely be coming back here.
I did let the manager know how much we enjoyed our first experience at Don Buyos, but suggested they work on their on-line presence. If it wasn’t for the small sign out on the street, I wouldn’t have even known they existed.
