The Strand is Fish & Fire Food Group’s latest DC effort. As a DC centric hospitality business, The Strand was an attractive opportunity. Nestled in the quiet Deanwood neighborhood, The Strand DC offers American BBQ and seafood in a comfortable neighborhood setting.

As someone who travels for food, this was my first visit to The Strand DC, and it did not disappoint. The variety of choices was impressive—if one dish wasn’t for you, there were plenty of others to enjoy.
What I loved:
Shrimp & Stone Grits: Excellent—large, flavorful shrimp cooked perfectly.
Sweet & Spicy Salmon: Great balance of flavor.
Fried Chicken: Even better when dipped in the BBQ sauce provided.
Waffle Station: Fun with lots of topping options.
Omelet Station: On point—fresh and well-seasoned.
The showstopper:
The collard greens with turkey and jerk salmon stole the show. I couldn’t stop going back for more! The fresh pineapples tasted like they came straight from Hawaii.
What could improve:
The oxtail and rice were a bit chewy—not the tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture I was hoping for.
Heads-up: $45 plus …( includes sweet tea)
A 20% gratuity, service fee, and taxes are automatically added, so plan accordingly.
Final thoughts:
The service, food, and ambiance were all great. Don’t judge this spot by its exterior or the neighborhood—step inside and discover this hidden gem.

This was a suggestion from our son who lives here. As Californian’s, when traveling, we love great places to eat with Great food!! This will be one of our favorite places to come whenever we come to D.C.!! Try it once and you’ll love it!!! We tried a variety of items and they all were good. Oxtail Stew, Fried Fish, Collard Greens, Cornbread, Hot Crab Dip, Ribs, Spinach, Mocktails, and the desserts were the warm Bread Pudding with caramel sauce and the Apple Pie with Ice Cream.

Disappointing. I went there for Sunday Brunch. No where on website does it say, reservations are REQUIRED. I tried calling a couple times on Saturday, no answer each time and Sunday morning. Parking across street at House of Praise as listed on the website was helpful. Arrived 1:15pm ONLY to be told Walk-ins are between 2-2:30pm, NOT listed on website. Finally got in naband the buffet line was long, why? they “Ran out of plates!” Okay more “Small plates arrived!” Only “Plastic utensils.” I saw some seated guests with cloth napkins and silverware . Buffet food as listed per website with fresh fruits. A young man was making omelettes to order , Belgian waffles and vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Lots of toppings to choose from to make your sundae. The food was slightly salty, the collard greens with smoked turkey otherwise everything was very tasty especially the jerk salmon, shrimp and grits, and braised oxtail . A 20% gratuity, operation fee and tax included in your check. My waitress was Destiny and she was great in providing water and keeping my glass filled with sweet tea . Not sure if I will make another trip but overall I rated three stars.

I arrived in DC late at night (my first time). I was looking for a place for beer and food. I called The Strand DC to make sure they are serving beer and food. The guy on the phone was so kind and said come on over. I arrived and the young woman who brought me a menu was so kind, then the chef ( James) came by and we chatted. He then brought me a complimentary plate of Fried Chicken Wontons. They only serve that during happy hour, which was long past. James just wanted me to have them. They were unbelievably good and the sauce on the side was just out of this world. I ordered the smash burger and that was also wonderful.
The food aside, the welcome and kindness I received at this place will always be one of my greatest memories.
I’ll definitely go back before I leave DC.
THANK YOU JAMES AND TEAM

The strand Restaurant graciously allowed us to host the open house for the FLWG Way integrated model of care. The food was amazing as was the service and the atmosphere. I would definitely post another event here.

My husband and I dined here for lunch today around 1:20 PM. The restaurant was not very busy—there were a few guests at the bar, a small group of three seated, and us—which made for a relaxed experience. Our first impression upon walking in was very positive; we were greeted promptly and warmly. The atmosphere was clean and inviting, and the restrooms were also well maintained.
Our waitress, Shawn, was pleasant and attentive, and she offered helpful menu suggestions.
Appetizers:
• Cornbread: 10/10 — served hot and absolutely delicious.
• Hot Crab Dip: 6/10 — the initial taste was a bit fishy.
Entrées:
• Fried Chicken Sandwich with Tater Tots: 6/10.
• Jerk Salmon with Mashed Potatoes and Spinach: 10/10 — excellent flavor and well prepared.
The music was slightly loud but still manageable. Overall, we had a good experience and look forward to returning with family and friends.

The Strand is in a renovated theater in the Deanwood area and is a hidden gem. My wife saw an Instagram video advertising The Strand and immediately sent it to me. With no hesitation we made a reservation to go. We went for the Sunday brunch and were excited to get there. When we arrived (11:29 am) they made us wait the minute until they opened (our rez was at 11:30). It was cold and we got mad (that’s on us) but 1 minute exactly they opened up. When we walked in we were impressed by how it looked. It has a very retro/speakeasy look that has good bones and a very good vibe. Immediately we were greeted by the hostesses and taken to our table. Our server, Ava, was very nice and was just the right amount of interactive to make our visit enjoyable. I’m going to list the only thing that was bad but they corrected it quickly was the music level. At first it was very loud but they brought it down to a suitable level where we could hear the music and still talk. The playlist was very energetic and I appreciated it because it was hip-hop/R&B that was appropriate for the age of the crowd who came for brunch.
Now on to the main event: The food!!!
It was smashing. I mean absolutely top-notch.
Collard Greens – 10
Peas and Rice – 10
Oxtails – INFINITY
Salmon – 10
Fried Chicken – 7 (I’ll dive deeper on this in a minute)
Mac & Cheese – (I don’t eat it I’m lactose intolerant) Wife says 10
Waffles – 10
OJ – 10
Fruit – 9 (Pineapple was out of season)
Croissants – 10
Rolls – 10
Omlets – Looked good but I was stuffed
So on the fried chicken I give it a 7 because it looked good but had no seasoning as I was writing this, I realized that the chicken was supposed to be combined with the waffle.
The service – INFINITY My wife is allergic to strawberries and a gentleman brought some blueberries from the back because the fruit is mixed together in a beautiful arrangement.
Overall, I highly recommend. I will say that there should be a notice that on the brunch reservations, there should be a disclaimer about the 20% gratuity added to the bill beforehand. Not a problem but some people get uppity about that.
To the staff at The Strand, please continue to serve community and making fantastic food.
We will be back for some of your other faire.

The Strand is a hidden gem in the Deanwood neighborhood of DC. My family and I have eaten here for brunch and dinner. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming – brunch is like a party! The food is delicious. My husband and I got the smoked chicken wings, hot crab dip, and a pizza for the Super Bowl (takeout at home), and all three dishes were stellar. The creamy poblano ranch with the wings is so good. Highly recommend!

First time visitor and I would definitely come back! The restaurant was clean and I appreciated the food offerings. I would suggest having the specials on the same menu with the other items. I had the lambchops, sweet potatoes, and brussel sprouts. Everything was well seasoned and prepared well.

This place is a whole vibe—the music fills the room, and the food truly feeds the soul. The shrimp and grits took me straight back to my childhood. The best way to describe this spot is pure Tenderism.
