I love this place, I’ve eaten there for years! They haven’t changed much at all. You get a huge helping of whatever you order. They never let your cup empty or your glass run dry. Their individuals who eat every meal there during the week, that tells you about the cost, extremely reasonable! 30 years at least I’ve been in and out of this facility, and never had a bad meal!

This restaurant has recently changed management and the menu has been completely refreshed. It was always a good place, but now it’s subjecting special. I’m hoping the decor gets a little update too, but in the meantime, I’m totally thinking the delicious bread menu.

The place is not what we expected. The food wasn’t good, the restaurant looks run down. Oh, while we were eating my bf noticed one of the waitresses buttered 2 slices of toast with no gloves on after she picked up something off the dirty floor.

It pains me to put down a small family business, but honestly, this place is not worth your time and even less so your money (or vice versa as this is quite subjective).

The setting is Tarantinoesque.

Even as you walk in, you can get an idea of what’s in store for you. The visually impaired, too, will be given plenty of ques as well to reconsider and walk out before it’s too late. Unfortunately, curiosity and hunger got the best of us.

The evidently leaky ceiling, the fact that no one bothered to change the 6 stained tiles, the vintage “aroma” all point to a place that is well past its prime with a caretaker that doesn’t seem to care all that much. On the plus side, if you were hoping to dine in a poorly sealed time capsule, you hit the jackpot!

On to the main course.

The food, it has to be said, is an insult to your senses. A collection of the cheapest of the cheap ingredients. Warmed up or tossed in a fryer with oil tracing its lineage to the early 2000s (maintained with the philosophy of “Only add, never change”). The highlight of the meal was a glass of icy Coke, which, for some reason, did not taste moldy, defying overwhelming odds against it. By comparison, McDonald’s is a luxury culinary experience, deserving of at least a Michelin star.

An interesting but oh so fitting peculiarity was that of the three sets of utensils presented, not one matched another. One of the forks was even a veteran of the magician heyday, bearing the scars and noodle like waves of repeated bending over countless performances.

Lastly I will have to disappoint anyone invested in my rant, and say that the personnel was friendly and the service ok, so no complaints there.

My advice to the owner would be – It’s time to retire. Let someone new, with passion and vigor, breathe much much needed fresh air into your place. The memories will always stay but the decor can and should go. Take pride in the chapter that you wrote, the folks you fed over the years, but don’t linger on to see a-holes like myself write mean but true things about your life’s work.

This past September was the first time in at least a couple of years dining in at this place. When it comes to a good ol’ fashioned American home cooked breakfast, Hillside is definitely on that list.

I used to come here much more often when I was living in Round Lake from May ’89- Nov ’02 but after moving to Beach Park, not so much unless I’m going to church which also happens to be in Grayslake which sadly isn’t that often since I usually start early Sunday nights on 3rd shift and I need my sleep.

Nothing fancy or upscale but indeed just your typical American family restaurant serving up some good eats. Have never had anything but breakfast here which is delicious. I’m often in the mood for some eggs up with toast to dip in the yolk, sausage and extra hashbrowns.

Dining room is always clean, prices remain reasonable for the quality food served even as prices nationwide are climbing up and service is always super friendly.

Since I’m a bit of a foodie, I’m all over the place so unfortunately I don’t get out to this venue as often as I’d like to. I do love supporting local businesses and if I get that craving for a home cooked breakfast, I’ll try my best to get back to the Hillside.

This is a cute old diner. We were driving down the street and decided to stop in for dinner we ordered cheeseburgers. The diner is old and a little outdated but the food was good and the wait staff was very nice. We enjoyed our dinner tonight and had a good experience.

Great family-owned place. It’s your typical Greek restaurant with delicious full breakfasts, homemade soups and salads for lunch and amazing complete dinners. There’s even a bar of you like an adult beverage with your meal.

Visited when the establishment was 1/4 full. Was seated in a minute. Two minutes later ordered, and within eight to 10 minutes was eating breakfast. The food was good. What impressed me the most was the efficiency. I watched a table of eight leave and within three minutes the table was clean and reset. Your team out front consisted of five to six girls. It was impressive watching them set up for a party of 12, as the 2nd wave of customers came in closer to 11:30am. It’s obvious, your profit needs to be put back into the building w/ staining/varishing tables, ceiling tiles, etc. The team there though is unmatched. I’ll definitely come again!

The restaurant looks very old. The inside very old style. Look like something your grandmother would design. Chairs look like old wood. The menus are very old looks like they are coming apart. I waited about 2 minutes before a waitress came to my table very good. I ordered a salad when it came out there was only one cucumber and one tomato. I could count the amount of shredded carrots 12. The mozzarella sticks came out. Looked very good but very hard. The cheese didn’t pull when you bit into it. I did not like them. I got bread with my appetizer and was not to my liking. The bread was so dry and hard it took me forever to chew. My main course was spaghetti and meat balls. Looked amazing and tasted amazing. They didn’t use the regular spaghetti sauce they created a homemade sauce that taste amazing. The meat balls where home made and soft but firm and moist. It was amazing. The waitress didn’t ask if I wanted dessert before giving me the check. Guess I’ll go somewhere else for my icecream

When i first entered this facility I wasn’t sure if it was a restaurant or a sauna. It felt like a steamy 80 degree day when entering here. The waitress we had was nice and pleasant, however the food was another story altogether.

I ordered the pizza burger. It looked appetizing but that was it. The second you picked it up the bottom of the burger was soggy and the onion slices were thick. The burger’s juices were dripping out and the burger was slowly falling apart. The fries were average. The chicken dumpling soup was hot and relatively good. I sent the burger back after a bite.

My aunt got the gyro skillet. It was mainly potatoes with a very scant amount of gyros. We asked if we could have some more gyros. When they came out it was oily and salty. The tomatoes tasted old and rotten. The gyros are frozen originally and not fresh when made.

The pancakes with cherries on top gave a bitter after taste. My aunt couldn’t even finish eating the food. Needless to say we were greatly disappointed by the quality of what we were eating. The only reason i gave a 2 star review instead of one was because the waitress was nice. We left and went to a different restaurant.
