Why wait in line at Wah Fung No.1 for char siu when you can get EVEN BETTER char siu right next door with NO LINE!?

New Kim Tuong might be one of the most underrated cantonese roast meat spots in NYC. It’s a no-frills, quick casual shop with some indoor seating.

What surprised me most was that the char siu was piping hot when they handed it over. Steam rushed out of the takeout box when I opened the lid!

Only $12/lb is easily one of the best deals you’ll find in Chinatown. The char siu was thick-cut, super juicy, and tender, with the perfect half-fat, half-lean balance (半肥瘦). It even had a malt sugar glaze and caramelized, charred edges.

My mom ordered the two BBQ meats over rice for just $9, and the portion was generous. The char siu and roast duck completely covered the rice, with a solid serving of pickled cabbage on the side. Honestly a great bang for your buck.

Food was okay. Still cheap but pricier than other Chinese spots in the area. The line wasn’t that long but it took like 20 min to just order food :/

– BBQ pork and BBQ duck over white rice: 6/10, meh have had better. There were also a bunch of bones

*Note: Cash only, and if you want to dine in, it’s $2 extra – they’re pretty strict on this

We heard a lot about this place serving affordable BBQ over rice without the long wait like Wah Fung, so of course after trying Wah Fung, we wanted to check this spot out too. We went on a random Tuesday around 3PM — no wait at all, just walked in and ordered.

I noticed the menu had Vietnamese on it, so I tried speaking Vietnamese to the butcher, but he didn’t understand. After hearing the staff talk to each other, I realized none of them were Vietnamese. Just something I found interesting.

We originally wanted two meats over rice, but they were out of pork and only had duck left, so we went with duck. It’s cash only. We ate there since they have tables and seating, and they provide Sriracha and other condiments on the table. Looking at the menu, they actually offer a lot more than just BBQ — there are other Chinese dishes as well.

The first bite came with high expectations because we were hungry, but honestly, it was disappointing. The rice was too wet and overcooked, the vegetables were bland with no seasoning, and the duck was just okay. Only a few pieces had solid meat — most were small pieces with bones. We were so disappointed we couldn’t even finish it. We just ate some of the meat and left the rest.

To be honest, $7 for one meat over rice is actually more expensive than Wah Fung, and the portion wasn’t very filling. The only plus is that they have seating available.

I guess we still haven’t found our go-to Chinese BBQ spot yet — maybe we’ll have better luck in Chinatown.

You should manage your expectation when you go here. The people seem rude with attitude, but they are really nice people. They won’t manage the line, so manage it yourself. This is NYC so expect everyone to try to cut ahead of you. The sit down area is very basic. The food is always good. I really like this place. Strongly recommend the wings.

This roast pork and char siu shop is considered a long-established brand in Chinatown. Affordable Cantonese cuisine Three-piece char siu is my favorite. It’s fine to eat it occasionally, but it gets a bit greasy if you eat too much.

Food was okay, I got pork and some pieces were soft and some were really chewy I couldn’t eat. Had good flavor and rice was hot and soft.
English is limited and cash only. Menu said $7 for meat over rice, guy charged me $8, but portion was great. Also I get some people are direct, not rude but the guy literally threw our change back at us. Went around 2pm and waited about 15mins from getting in line to getting food, so much quicker than next door. Indoor seating is extremely limited so plan to eat to go.

Dropped by New Kim Tuong for some roast meat on rice after seeing the long queue at Wah Fung—and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised! Got a generous portion for $8.50, which came packed with rice and meat. The roast pork was yummy, and while the duck was a little on the drier side and the skin wasn’t super crispy, it still hit the spot. A pretty solid option if you’re craving roast meats without the wait!

New Kim Tuong in Chinatown, New York City, is an absolute gem! From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted with warm smiles and the enticing aroma of authentic Chinese cuisine. But the real stars of the show were undoubtedly the BBQ pork and the roast duck.
Let’s start with the BBQ pork – I can honestly say it was the best I have ever tasted. The pork was incredibly tender and juicy, with a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. The caramelized glaze was simply divine, creating a delightful sticky texture that made each bite a moment of pure bliss. My taste buds were singing!
And then there was the roast duck. Oh my goodness! The skin was unbelievably crispy, shattering with the slightest touch, while the meat underneath remained succulent and flavorful. The subtle hints of traditional Chinese spices elevated the dish to another level. It was cooked to absolute perfection, a true testament to the chef’s skill and expertise.
Beyond the exceptional food, the service was also top-notch. The staff were attentive, friendly, and efficient, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. The atmosphere was bustling and authentic, adding to the overall charm of the restaurant.
If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable culinary experience in Chinatown, look no further than New Kim Tuong. Their BBQ pork and roast duck are not to be missed – they are, without a doubt, sensational. This restaurant has earned every one of its five stars, and I can’t wait to return for another incredible meal. Highly, highly recommended!

honestly much better spots in nyc chinatown for roast meat like big wong – paid $18 for very small portions that were ice cold and not crispy at all. not to mention the trash was just a trash bag on the floor. service was fine, no complaints.
