Happy Crab Ballard is Seattle’s newest waterfront restaurant, opening in the former Anthony’s on Shilshole Bay. The concept fuses the lively energy of a Cajun seafood boil with the craftsmanship of Chinese cuisine, creating a one-of-a-kind East-meets-West dining experience. Founded by Lily Wu, who arrived in the U.S. in 2006 and worked as a housekeeper before building Xi’an Noodles, Happy Crab marks her flagship venture — uniting Asian flavors, Cajun spice, and Seattle’s love for seafood in one vibrant destination.

Went to brunch with a group of friends on a Sunday at Happy Crab. The space is huge with plenty of parking, and the waterfront location has an awesome view of Puget Sound.

We started with the clams, which were really good, and the fried rice and seafood were tasty across the board. I ordered the shrimp and grits, but it didn’t hit the mark for me, the shrimp were good, but the grits weren’t creamy and came out dense and a bit lumpy. The Bloody Mary was well made, the service was great, and overall it was a fun spot for a group brunch.

Happy Crab is a seafood restaurant that’s known for their “boils” where things are cooked together and then eaten with your hands. The location is awesome, right on the water close by to Golden Gardens. The parking lot here is big, so no problem finding a spot. Inside, they probably have 4 or 5 dozen tables, plus a little bar area with a TV, and a big area outside to eat during the warmer weather. The views to the water are immaculate. Their menu is big, with lots of plates and also some shareable crab or shrimp boils. They set you up with shell crackers, bibs, and little tools to pull out any meat from shells. Their seafood is fresh, and delicious. They have 4 flavors for the sauce, with garlic butter and Cajun being good, but their Mala is so good and spicy, so be warned. Their portion sizes are big, even with a menu with higher prices. Quality and taste easily help that out though. The staff are super friendly, and always walking around trying to help people. If you want to bring a big group, they can accommodate but you should make a reservation. Overall this is an amazing spot for lunch or dinner, or for an event.

Our new happy place! Asian-style Cajun/Creole and fried seafood with a great supplemental menu of biang biang noodles, xiao long bao, dumplings and wonton from the Xi’an Noodles people. The seafood boil portion was generous, and the green mussels were crisp and succulent. The happy hour jambalaya and étouffée were again Asian-style but tasty. I had a stiff Paloma cocktail worthy of that from a Chinese bar, although they did not have rye whiskey on hand for an interesting Black Walnut Manhattan. Relaxed spacious atmosphere, lovely panoramic Puget sound view, pleasant low-key service, and cute robot waiters add up to a good value dinner.

You’re paying for the atmosphere, and nice service. Genuine compliments to the team putting in nice effort, but I just can’t recommend choosing this spot.

Seattle surrounding areas offers many other options for (in my opinion) better quality seafood, flavor, and options.

The atmosphere is nice, and the menu was clear- but the quality and portion of food felt, underwhelming, and un-refined.

Small icks like I had to ask for a cleaner spoon. Was told they don’t have any sauce that comes with oysters, and they boast about the noodles, but are mushy and nothing special.

Sorry, had higher hopes. Bubble tea drinks are mediocre.

Overall food, especially the crab & shrimp platters went over well, similar to other venues like this we’ve been to. Disappointed in the chowder and grits. Both were surprisingly tasteless. Grits need at least salt and pepper (can’t just boil the corn meal in water) and I think should have a smoother texture .

We stopped by around 3 PM on a Monday and were surprised to find the place almost empty—just a couple of people enjoying the outdoor seating. The building feels brand new: spacious, modern, and honestly much more upscale than I expected. The views are stunning. It was a gorgeous day, and the sunlight reflecting off the water made the whole experience.

We tried the seafood boil and pork bao—both were delicious. The menu was limited when we visited, but that’s likely because they’re still newly opened. One unexpected highlight? The bathrooms. Seriously—floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall white. So bright and clean, it almost felt futuristic. And the little robot that delivered our food was a fun touch! Our server was brand new (first day!) and getting training from senior staff — they were super attentive and kind. He did great!

We visit Seattle once or twice a year, and this spot is definitely going on our regular list.

Great food but weird menu. Onion rings come with French fries? Service was abysmal. 7 in our party and everyone’s meal came at different times. My crab cakes came after all my fellow diners were done and I had stuffed myself with more French fries than I’ve ever seen on a dinner table. They were good but not what I was thinking of for an entree. I asked the very nice server what was holding up my meal and she said they were short staffed. Understandable but the place was empty. Who knows? Will try them again in a few months once they’ve worked out the service kinks. Want to see them succeed. Oh, incredible views of course.

Frozen everything: onion rings? Rubbery. French fries? Dried out sticks. Shrimp? Rubber bands to be flung. Green mussels?! Great as rubber bands to reinforce the flowered blowing outside. Nothing was fresh. NOTHING! The only redeeming value was our server. As an Asian visiting this spot: offended! Avoid!

Excellent place to dine right on the water front. One of my favorite restaurants I dined at on my Seattle vacation. Especially loved the coleslaw.
