Veteran eatery located in an old mansion boasting Northern Italian fare & a Barolo-heavy wine list.

Sticker shock alert – not sure if it’s because of Valentine’s Day or if this is the norm, but $39 for a bowl of pasta is outrageous. Yes, it comes with salad and sides but seriously?? I asked for a glass of house wine which was $17.50 and not that great a pour. Sure, everyone is pleasant enough and that’s why I’d feel bad giving 2 stars, but the food definitely does not justify the price point and this definitely put a damper on the holiday.

Lovely restaurant off the beaten path, family owned, interesting history, wonderfully decorated. The food was terrific, the service wonderful and the chef checking on everyone! Everything freshly made from the ricotta with truffle honey, the marvelous tomatoe soup, the chantrel mushroom ravioli and my favorite berry, huckleberry sauce over vanilla ice cream! A joy!

Atmosphere is warm and inviting. For an old victorian building, it was totally immaculate and clean. Dinner was out of this world. Would highly recommend. Absolutely love the place. Please visit and you will be so glad you did.

My adult brothers & I brought the parental units for Chef’s Night. A+ ambiance, service, efficiency, variety, drinks, and food! Given the excellent price for the pre-fixe menu, we expected our options and portions to be limited—not so! Mom raved about her Negroni, I loved the smoked Danish trout, and the 5 different entrées brought all-around delight. All of our orders came out quickly, correctly, and at the same time. Our waiter was attentive and charming. Thank you, Berta’s Chateau, for a lovely, memorable night!

This is a very special place. The nostalgia factor is a huge part of why the experience here is great. You’re transported to the past with an old school dining experience, and a stellar four course menu that leaves nothing more to be desired.
Everything from fresh oysters to clams casino to escargot to soft shell crabs, veal, chicken, liver, fresh fish….. the list is immense and yet everything is always so fresh and delicious. There’s nothing you can order that won’t be prepared wonderfully.
To boot, the Chef and owner cares immensely about serving you the best products possible- he knows where everything comes from and it’s a fun experience when he comes to the table to share the ingredient’s stories.
If you’re into cocktails or wine, you’ll be impressed by the selection here. A lot of Italian gems, and other classic regions are all represented with an emphasis on smaller production wines.
When it comes time for the end of the meal, the list of desserts is just as impressive, with a variety of espresso, coffee, teas and after dinner drinks including aged ports, sherries, and a variety of cordials.
One thing to note- call ahead to let them know you’re coming, as it will give them time to prepare and enhance the experience.

Peter is as engaging and knowledgeable as he is talented in the kitchen. I went to Bertas with my grandfather when I was young and found the same comfortable environment and amazing food 30 years later. Great wine list, great quality good, inky wish I lived closer to make it my usual Sunday Italian meal.

Been here about 5 times, food is very consistent and good, but the order is always slightly messed up. For example, yesterday, we never got the ginger ale we ordered or the coke refill or the correct coffee and 2 out of the 4 desserts were wrong.
There is one waiter serving everyone so it was hard to get his attention.

My family had been going there for decades! It has been a very long time since we have gone. We took my mom here tonight for her 90th birthday, and it did not disappoint! The food is delicious, and the service is stellar. This is truly the best hidden gem in NJ.
