As a Nigerian myself, I am always eager to try Nigerian restaurants. The reviews weren’t great, but I try to form my own opinion. That being said, the reviews were spot on. Before I review the food I want to say that the owner was very kind and welcoming. The restaurant located underground of JFK was clean and inviting. I wish I could say positive things about the food. I ordered jollof rice with peppered goat, and the seasoned spinach , 2 meat pies and a bag of chinchin. My total was $61. Never have I paid that much for African food, and I have frequented many African restaurants in Philadelphia. I was literally flabbergasted when I reviewed my receipt. There was a 15% gratuity automatically included. How do you as a business owner do that, for a take-out order no less? The food took about 20 mins to come out after we ordered. We didn’t dine in. When we got home to eat, the portion was crazy… as in crazy small. I had to laugh because surely this was a joke.

The jollof rice Smokey and tasty, but it was so salty.
The peppered goat: by far the worst item, was also salty and SO OILY. Literally baptized in grease and tough to chew.
The spinach was really tasty, good flavor but unfortunately also oily.
The meat pie, has no taste. The dough was nice and flaky. We welcomed the meat pie, it was a much needed palate cleanser.
The chinchin was crunchy and delicious with the right amount of sweetness.
All in all, I would not recommend this restaurant. It is overpriced and the food quality and quantity does not justify the price.

I tried New Era for the first time and it was great. Chef T was very friendly and had no problem explaining the menu to me. When I tried to order multiple things from the menu, she showed me a combo that already contained those things so I could get more bang for my buck. I really appreciated her honesty. Also, when the food took a little longer than expected, she offered me a free beverage for my wait. Her customer service was impeccable. You can tell she really loves what she does. The food was amazing! The jollof rice had a nice smoky flavor to it. The pepper chicken was juicy with a nice spice but somehow Chef T was able to get a crispy skin on it. The plantains were sweet and caramelized. The portion of food was great too! I will definitely be returning.

The Naja bowl was absolutely delicious with a flavorful Smokey rice pairing well with chicken and plantains. I also loved the ayamase (designer stew) it was the best I’ve ever had. I’m giving this restaurant grace and space to grow because the owner is so nice and will work to make the experience right.

I purchased food from New Era Cuisine 3 times. The first time I purchased Chicken with Jollof rice. It was tasty and the wait was a little long, but nothing too crazy. The second time, I purchased Jollof rice and I placed my order on-line and by the time I arrived at the restaurant, my order was ready. The third I made a purchase, I ordered Suya wings and french fries and this was the worst experience. I placed my order on-line at around 12:49. I was scheduled to pick up the food at 1:30 and I arrived at the restaurant at 1:41. When I walked in, there was 1 customer waiting and there was not anyone at the counter to help/service me. I rang the little bell at the counter and no one came out. After about 7 minutes, a young lady finally walked out and asked how could she help me. I told her I was there to pick up an on-line order and she said give me a second. I waited for another 20 minutes for my order. It appeared that the young lady was the only person working in the restaurant at the time. So that means she must have been taking the orders, cooking the food, filling the orders and collecting payments. That is way to much for 1 person. There should never be just 1 person working at any given moment. So when I asked why the order was not ready at 1:30 when I received a notification stating that it was ready. The young lady made up a lie saying the order didn’t come in to them when I made the order. She said she received the order 5 minutes before I walked in, which I do not believe at all. She would have been better off telling the truth and said she was the only one working and she was overwhelmed and got backed up with the orders. Which seems closer to the truth. The food wasn’t bad, but if New Era Cuisine would like to have longevity at the underground location, they have to do better. The long waits are unacceptable. I hope they get it together and I wish them well, but I’m taking a break from them for a very long time.

I had a great meal with Chef T & the entire shop. We ordered the combo with chicken and the grilled fish, and everything was so delicious. The rice was really flavorful, and the jollof rice had an amazing smokiness. The texture in both the fish and the plantains were great — the grilled fish was juicy and tender, and the plantains had a great crispy outer crust and a sweet softness inside. The owner was so nice, I highly recommend coming here!

I ordered rice and stew (a very small portion for 48) and I have been told to pay 10 extra just to dine in ofc I didn’t but once I arrived home the food was really really salty and make the whole dish unbeatable I’m very disappointed this is my first time ever leaving a review anywhere I hope the owner would see this and improve the quality and the portions cause this is unacceptable.
The girl at the front desk was very nice btw
