The food was excellent from start to finish. The oyster with green chili was fresh with just the right amount of heat, the marinated peppers on toast were simple but packed with flavor, and the snails in tamarind butter were rich and addictive. The stuffed pepper with pork, woodear mushrooms, and shrimp was hearty and satisfying, and dessert — a pavlova with tapioca pudding and blueberry ice cream — was the perfect, refreshing finish. Great food, warm service, and a cozy vibe make this a spot worth coming back to..if you can get in!
Is it worth waiting 40 minutes in line? Maybe once, but I’m excited for the day when it feels a little less “scene-y” and you can just bop in on a weeknight. Overall, a unique experience with seriously good food.
Service was very slow. Waiter spilled fish sauce on my friend.
There are much better Vietnamese places for better value.
Bar seats are a bit tight and may not be the best for anyone with mobility issues.
After being sat at one of the few indoor tables they have, our order wasn’t taken for about 15 minutes. Which if you knew how small that place is, was a surprise to us. A group of three behind us sat after us and ordered/got their food immediately so the service is a bit spotty.
After finally ordering however, the drinks and food started flowing out fast. As we were a couple plates in, we were asked to move to the bar. With no explanation or anything. We were obviously irritated and asked why. It was then communicated that there was a reservation snafu and that there was a group that needed those seats. After more questioning we then found out that a four top was required for this party and that our table plus one that just opened up next to us was where they would seat this party.
To be clear, they were not rude when approaching this with us. And after we clearly expressed our frustration and our annoyance, we were offered our drinks and a dessert on the house. We were less annoyed about the situation itself, though I’d expect a better seating plan from this hyped up of a restaurant. Things happen, we’re all human. But it was the way it was initially communicated to us. That we just needed to transition to the bar, with no explanation. It wasn’t until we pushed back, asked for more context, expressed our discontent, before apologies were made and things were offered to be taken off our bill. It was then eventually offered that we “totally don’t have to move either”. But of course we did because the space is tiny and we don’t want to be disruptive of their service.
All that to say, our experience was soured after this. And the food, albeit solid, did not live up to the punchy, unique flavors I’ve been hearing about. If the food stood out more, it would’ve helped my overall thoughts on this place.
Again, snails were fabulous, could eat a million of those. But I am sad to say that this was an unfortunate bust.
Reservation was hard to get as this place is tiny tiny and when you arrive they seat everyone with the same approx. reservation time together so it feels like a group multi-course meal.
Food is good, flavorful, and different. It’s a small menu that changes often. Everything we got was pretty good but I would definitely SKIP on the snails. No flavor and ultra tiny. We ordered 7 plates total (6 apps + 1 large) to split between two people.
Oddly, their food menu is 1 page while their wine menu is 5-6 pages. No cocktails, only wine and some sodas.
Service was fine. It was a hot day and with how packed to the brim they were the waitress was slow to refill waters. Food takes some time to come out too so you have time between dishes. Don’t expect to get in and out though.
Space is too tight. You are elbow to elbow with everyone there, whether table or counter seating. We sat at the counter and it was hard to even keep my phone on the table with the dishes on it. We dropped things often on the floor. The bathroom is so tight to get to too- you have to basically jump over the kitchen past all the staff. If you’re a bigger person I would skip this place altogether.
It’s a nice, cute place with good munchies. But given the price tag, small portions, and super tight fit, even the vibes and charm probably won’t get me to come back unless they got a bigger location.
The orange wine they served is easily the best natural wine I’ve ever had.
You can definitely see the French influence coming through in each plate and the overall aesthetic. The restaurant feels as local in the Lower East Side as it would in the 11th arr. in Paris.
Don’t go expecting traditional Vietnamese flavors. Ha’s Snack Bar is much more a modern French bistro that happens to have a Vietnamese owner. All in all, I’m really glad I tried it!
When arriving, somehow the reservation got messed up a bit, so we got punted from 6pm to waiting for an inside table in the scorching heat. It took about 45 minutes to get the table, which was brutal, but the owner was lovely and gave us 2 delicious spritzes ($17 – well worth).
Regarding the meal, it’s designed for those who love french food with a twist of vietnamese. The snails were delicious and the meal came heavily with bread. Favorite dish was the fish, which came with rice ($42). Pate was also quite tasty in general.
The portions are small, and felt like tapas size. Meal is ~$100/pp without alcohol, ~$150/pp with alcohol.
Service overall was good, so I won’t ding them for the reservation blunder. It took a while to get new water, and they seemed to be running around in chaos. Could be a bit more organized.
Overall 4/5 stars given the pricing to food, and the overall service which was hit or miss sometimes.
