Restaurant Review: Ha’s Snack Bar in NYC – Grub Street

Ha’s Snack Bar, a tiny, delicious little pocket on Broome Street, is a snack bar. That’s not to diminish the food, which is ambitious, filling, and meal-size.

I managed to snag a reservation for 1 for a Saturday nite while walking by earlier that week. When I arrived, the line was really long so I was especially happy to have a reservation. It’s a very small, snug restaurant but very charming. If you’re lucky, you may be seated at the bar or at one of the few tables. I was seated facing the wall (note: I’m still happy to get in but be forewarned that the seating is very tight and you are probably intended to get in and out fast). I ordered the chanterelle toast with cheese and it was delicious – it was also brand new on the menu. Next I got the sweet and sour mussels which were good. The mussels were followed by the snails with tamarind sauce – absolutely the stars of the menu!!! So delicious!! For dessert I ordered the almond joy ice cream which was delicious also. I was in and out in under an hour.

I stopped by as a solo diner on a Friday evening around 5:15 pm and lucked out snagging the last seat. Anthony, Sadie Mae, and the rest of the staff immediately made me feel welcome and taken care of.

The food was excellent from start to finish. The oyster with green chili was fresh with just the right amount of heat, the marinated peppers on toast were simple but packed with flavor, and the snails in tamarind butter were rich and addictive. The stuffed pepper with pork, woodear mushrooms, and shrimp was hearty and satisfying, and dessert — a pavlova with tapioca pudding and blueberry ice cream — was the perfect, refreshing finish. Great food, warm service, and a cozy vibe make this a spot worth coming back to..if you can get in!

We loved the vibe at Has Snack Bar it’s such a cool spot where you can watch the chefs cooking away in the tiny open kitchen while great music plays in the background. Our server gave awesome recs and we enjoyed every dish. The pepper toast was super unique and tasty, the salad was fresh with a pop of basil, and the egg mayo with baguette was delish. The stuffed pepper was fun in concept (and the shrimp was a nice touch), but the flavor didn’t fully land for us.

Is it worth waiting 40 minutes in line? Maybe once, but I’m excited for the day when it feels a little less “scene-y” and you can just bop in on a weeknight. Overall, a unique experience with seriously good food.

Hidden gem with amazing Southeast Asian flavors and creative small plates. Every dish is vibrant and perfectly balanced — you can taste the care in every bite. The vibe is cozy and friendly, perfect for a casual night out. Great drinks and warm service too!

I really wanted to like it but I wouldn’t return. Food was well done but limited items. Creative menu, however, not friendly to vegetarians or non-seafood eaters. Expensive and small portions.

Service was very slow. Waiter spilled fish sauce on my friend.

There are much better Vietnamese places for better value.

We wanted to try every dish, but we had a later seating and a few dishes were already sold out. We still managed to try 8 out of the 11 savory items and they were all brilliant. Everything you love about Vietnamese food; deep, complex, funky flavors combined with fresh lightness.

Bar seats are a bit tight and may not be the best for anyone with mobility issues.

All the recent hype around this place made me all the more excited when I snagged a res for a late Friday night. The vibes were great and the snails even better, but everything else fell flat.

After being sat at one of the few indoor tables they have, our order wasn’t taken for about 15 minutes. Which if you knew how small that place is, was a surprise to us. A group of three behind us sat after us and ordered/got their food immediately so the service is a bit spotty.

After finally ordering however, the drinks and food started flowing out fast. As we were a couple plates in, we were asked to move to the bar. With no explanation or anything. We were obviously irritated and asked why. It was then communicated that there was a reservation snafu and that there was a group that needed those seats. After more questioning we then found out that a four top was required for this party and that our table plus one that just opened up next to us was where they would seat this party.

To be clear, they were not rude when approaching this with us. And after we clearly expressed our frustration and our annoyance, we were offered our drinks and a dessert on the house. We were less annoyed about the situation itself, though I’d expect a better seating plan from this hyped up of a restaurant. Things happen, we’re all human. But it was the way it was initially communicated to us. That we just needed to transition to the bar, with no explanation. It wasn’t until we pushed back, asked for more context, expressed our discontent, before apologies were made and things were offered to be taken off our bill. It was then eventually offered that we “totally don’t have to move either”. But of course we did because the space is tiny and we don’t want to be disruptive of their service.

All that to say, our experience was soured after this. And the food, albeit solid, did not live up to the punchy, unique flavors I’ve been hearing about. If the food stood out more, it would’ve helped my overall thoughts on this place.

Again, snails were fabulous, could eat a million of those. But I am sad to say that this was an unfortunate bust.

Delicious and flavorful food but it’s indeed snack-sized. Leave hungry unless you plan to drop serious money. Two people, no drinks, almost $200.

Reservation was hard to get as this place is tiny tiny and when you arrive they seat everyone with the same approx. reservation time together so it feels like a group multi-course meal.

Food is good, flavorful, and different. It’s a small menu that changes often. Everything we got was pretty good but I would definitely SKIP on the snails. No flavor and ultra tiny. We ordered 7 plates total (6 apps + 1 large) to split between two people.

Oddly, their food menu is 1 page while their wine menu is 5-6 pages. No cocktails, only wine and some sodas.

Service was fine. It was a hot day and with how packed to the brim they were the waitress was slow to refill waters. Food takes some time to come out too so you have time between dishes. Don’t expect to get in and out though.

Space is too tight. You are elbow to elbow with everyone there, whether table or counter seating. We sat at the counter and it was hard to even keep my phone on the table with the dishes on it. We dropped things often on the floor. The bathroom is so tight to get to too- you have to basically jump over the kitchen past all the staff. If you’re a bigger person I would skip this place altogether.

It’s a nice, cute place with good munchies. But given the price tag, small portions, and super tight fit, even the vibes and charm probably won’t get me to come back unless they got a bigger location.

Walked in on a Thursday night, and got the oysters, snails, tuna crudo and the stuffed pepper. Each dish was interesting, unique and delicious.
The orange wine they served is easily the best natural wine I’ve ever had.

You can definitely see the French influence coming through in each plate and the overall aesthetic. The restaurant feels as local in the Lower East Side as it would in the 11th arr. in Paris.

Don’t go expecting traditional Vietnamese flavors. Ha’s Snack Bar is much more a modern French bistro that happens to have a Vietnamese owner. All in all, I’m really glad I tried it!

Super cute vietnamese + french restaurant, housed in an originally cozy wine bar. There’s seating for ~6 at the bar, ~6 outside, and ~12 inside other than the bar. It’s a tiny venue, which makes the reservations super hard to get.

When arriving, somehow the reservation got messed up a bit, so we got punted from 6pm to waiting for an inside table in the scorching heat. It took about 45 minutes to get the table, which was brutal, but the owner was lovely and gave us 2 delicious spritzes ($17 – well worth).

Regarding the meal, it’s designed for those who love french food with a twist of vietnamese. The snails were delicious and the meal came heavily with bread. Favorite dish was the fish, which came with rice ($42). Pate was also quite tasty in general.

The portions are small, and felt like tapas size. Meal is ~$100/pp without alcohol, ~$150/pp with alcohol.

Service overall was good, so I won’t ding them for the reservation blunder. It took a while to get new water, and they seemed to be running around in chaos. Could be a bit more organized.

Overall 4/5 stars given the pricing to food, and the overall service which was hit or miss sometimes.
