To create delicacies, you have to cook with soul. This is the basic premise of La Maja. Guided by love and our Argentine traditions, we create art with empanadas. Our dough is crispy and golden like the Patagonian steppe; the sublime aromas are flavors whispered to us by our ancestors.

Out of all the options in Redwood City, this place feels like a little oasis — somewhere you can pause, relax, and disconnect from the hectic downtown energy. The background music sets the mood perfectly: not loud, but with rhythm and variety. I’ve even discovered new artists here — today it was Rastafarian Mariachi — which made the experience even more fun.
The food is consistently fresh, and I especially appreciate the way each empanada is stamped with a letter to identify the filling. It makes group orders so easy — “S” for Spinach, “M” for Mushroom, “C” for Chicken — no mix-ups, no guessing. Two empanadas make an excellent, satisfying lunch, and you can pair them with a nice selection of coffees or teas, made to order.
The seating is comfortable and thoughtfully designed — from woven chairs with pillows to high bar stools both indoors and outdoors. Even the restroom area has a decor and is very clean!
Yes, prices have gone up everywhere, but I’d still rather pay $12 here for a fresh, wholesome lunch than the same price for a single dessert slice elsewhere in RC.
I’ll definitely keep coming back — and I absolutely recommend you stop by as well!
Pro tip: Make sure to take advantage of the wine and 2 empanada deal that they have
I was surprised at the selection–there were a lot of savory ones to choose and less of the sweet ones, considering my visit was late in the day. I chose the traditional beef and spicy chicken to take home. These easily reheated in the convection oven nicely and the crust was crisp. I noticed that at the crust edge are letters to indicate what kind of empanada you ordered. The beef was savory and delicious, it was perfectly moist, as was the chicken. The chicken was a little bit spicy, but not intolerable, unless you cannot eat spicy at all, then I would stay away from the spicy chicken.
Definitely worth checking out–the empanadas are delicious.
The empanada are made fresh, so you get that home style taste to them.
There is seating inside and some seating outside, and the outside seating looks very cozy to enjoy some wine and an empanada.
I would definitely come back again!
On Sunday it advertised store hours as 12:00 pm opening. I was able to place an online order at 11:44 am and an email was sent to pick up between 12:00 – 12:10 pm.
I arrived at 12:04 pm and the store was closed, lights out, no one in sight, and door locked. I was disappointed as I anticipated coordinating a refund thinking I wasted my time and gas. When I tried to submit for a refund it requested I call the store. To my surprise someone answered at 12:09 pm.
I let them know I placed a take out order and was just at the store and it was closed. They did not acknowledge that the store opened late. They mentioned oh it takes time to open like you have to unlock and turn on the oven. I was not interested in excuses. They let me know I can pick up the order in 10 minutes. We returned back to the store and I let them know my name and that I placed a take out order. They mentioned again that it’ll take 10 minutes although my order was expected to be ready at this time. I also communicated I was inconvenienced when I arrived and the shop was closed during business hours. I explained that I thought I’d need to submit a refund. Again no acknowledgment that the store was closed during business hours. Instead they responded well you know it’s Sunday so sometimes we open at 12 sometimes we open 12:10. I let them know they should address that in the store hours because I didn’t appreciate being inconvenienced. They responded ya I think I’ll change that then.
At this point I decide I no longer want to move forward with the order and request a refund. They tell me to ask their online ordering system for a refund. I inform them that it directs me to call them. The employee says they don’t know how to do a refund. I ask if I can get cash back otherwise and they respond we don’t do that. I inform them I don’t want to move forward with the order and they say they’ll try to call their online ordering system. Eventually I speak to someone from the online ordering system and the refund is squared away. I confirm this with the employee and they’re confused that the refund has happened and just reply I’ll check my bank account. I am surprised by their response and am not sure if I’ve been dealing with an employee or the owner. Needless to say I will not be ordering from here again.
