It’s like your living room, but filled with extra books, more smiling people, and tea.
The Philosopher’s House is a non-profit tea house – a gathering space, library, and class space in one. Designed to be a “living room” for inquisitive and compassion-focused people, The Philosopher’s House is a place to relax and explore new ideas in an intellectually-curious, encouraging community. Drop by to get a drink, read, work, or join one of our various classes/meetups.

If you come here as often as I do then it will be super busy, so come, but not too often. I need to stay open and thrive but not get crazy busy.

The Philosopher’s House is such a gem in Johnson City. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and thoughtfully curated — you immediately feel welcomed the moment you walk in. The space has so much character, and there’s a calm, inviting vibe that makes you want to stay awhile.
The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what they do. Whether you’re browsing, attending an event, or just stopping in, the experience feels intentional and community-focused.
Johnson City is lucky to have a place like this. Highly recommend stopping by — it’s one of those spots that makes the area feel special.

Very cute little spot here in downtown Johnson City and so different from anywhere else, too! It’s perfect for your average tea lover and there is a great variety of teas to choose from. They also have local vendors selling their jewelry and plants, etc., so it’s nice and refreshing to see a local business support other local vendors!! Inside is very spacious with lots of seating to choose from, and there is a big calendar with fun events happening throughout the month for the community to come together and hang out. There is something for everyone here, and I know I will definitely be back!

I went with a group of 6 ladies. The person who coordinated going there called to reserve a room and we were given a cute spot upstairs (this is an old house converted to a coffee shop, so there are many nooks that can be used to meet in if you don’t want to stay in the main room downstairs). I had hot cocoa, a couple others had a French Press (two shared as it was enough for them to each have a cup of coffee). One ordered a galette ad two had scones. There is also an outdoor seating area that can be used as well. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

I cannot express how much I love this place. The team that works here is so friendly and incredibly easy to talk to. They all speak to you like long term friends or family, there’s no awkwardness when asking them questions. The house itself is incredibly clean, each room has such an enveloping atmosphere unique to the room’s theme. I personally really enjoy the Green Room for the (as I perceive it) druid, forest wanderer vibes it gives off. The music they play is soft and calming. The tea and the food they offer are the real stars. I can easily spend hours in here without even knowing any time has passed. This is a wonderful, rather whimsical place that is amazing for studying, making friends, or just reading. I highly recommend it for everyone.

This is such a cute tea house! We had an excellent time just drinking tea and hanging out in one the private rooms. There is several very comfortable chairs and couches. The tea was amazing and the staff very knowledgeable and helpful in making a decision. We did not get to explore the whole house. Very clean inside and a great atmosphere. We will definitely be back!

Had such a fun time with my friend. We visited the game room which had a lot of games to play. I got the wild strawberry tea with a little bit of honey and it was amazing! This place is so cute. I would definitely come back again and again!

One of our new favorite places! Gorgeous home, wonderful staff, and amazing tea. I like the several private rooms for smaller gatherings. The main room can get a little loud when there’s a big group having a meet up so it’s nice to have other spaces to retreat to. If you’re worried about any noise from the main room, I’d bring some headphones but that just adds to the cozy , personal experience 🙂

I come here as a regular and have membership. I work from home and often come her to do work. Feeling surrounded by people in a nice comfortable atmosphere is great! I don’t drink coffee and I’m not a fan of tea , usually, but The Philosopher’s House has introduced me to many many teas I truly enjoy sipping on as I work.
The Philosopher’s House is more than. A tea house it’s a space for community. They have tons of sliding scale or even free classes and clubs and work to help the community grow. They have a various rooms some private or semi private and open areas and a Japanese seating area to sit. If you’re familiar with Dobra in Asheville, this has a similar vibe but friendlier, homier, and brighter! Haha.
Lovely lovely space and I recommend checking it out!!
