When you call a place Granny’s, that means certain things. It might mean down home cooking, but it definitely means experience and character and traditional recipes. But what you get here is really just a standard lunch place. Might as well be called Milo’s or Something. So that was a little bit disappointing.
The menu photo that Google maps had that was 10 months old has definitely been changed because the club sandwich had been bumped up to $8 now.
But the burger was the real kicker. I ordered the cheeseburger plate/special, with tomato lettuce and onion. At 10 dollars for the burger, fries, and a drink, I will definitely not be ordering that again. I’d rather turn to pretty much anywhere like the nearby Hardee’s or Cookout or Burger King. It might be a Sonic nearby as well.
The Patty was fairly small, and the tomato and lettuce really overwhelmed the flavor for most of the bites. The Patty also had no char/grill flavor on it, and was even lacking in salt.
It’s also possible that many of the items are a little overpriced for what you get. But I do know that trying to keep a small business going in this economy does cost something and so maybe it’s fair. They have to pay their lease and bills and all that.
The good …
The fries were perfect, pretty much. Just the right amount of salt and a nice crisp outside with tender insides. Not too many of those hard crunchy shard looking pieces. I like the cookout style fries and these are pretty similar. The fries and ketchup were definitely helping the burger to taste better.
The club sandwich was also very good. I don’t eat them too much, because I really love burgers, and so I don’t know if $8 is a good price. 10 months ago the menu had them at $7, and to me that seems like a fair price.
There was a good amount of meat to it and the bread has a nice toast and the bacon broke apart nicely without being tough and chewy. The ingredients seemed fresh and tender when they were supposed to be. I’m really glad I ordered it because it made me walk away with a much better view of the place. If all I had eaten was the burger, I would have definitely driven away disappointed.
It looks like the proprietors are probably Spanish. When I tried to order at the menu / intercom, I was asking what items they were known for, and I pretty much got no answer. I don’t know if the lady who answered initially didn’t speak much English and so they had to run and get somebody else. But at least they could have said “hold on a minute please” or something. But after hearing nothing I asked my question again and the person said please come to the window. Maybe their intercom doesn’t work very well?
But this time a man was at the window and he was very nice and spoke English fairly well. He told me that in this fall season the vegetable soup was very popular. He also said they were known for their fish sandwiches like flounder and trout. And ribeye sandwich also.
I do like good fried seafood and so if I ever found myself in this area again, I might roll the dice and try it here.
-Hamburger was simple with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onions (could have had a bit more), mayo & ketchup (from ketchup packet). I enjoyed it.
-French fries were nicely salted. Mix of some cooked soft & majority cooked to a golden scrisp. Nothing fancy or overly seasoned is perfect for me.
-Fried okra was nicely cooked! Not greasy or overly breaded. The only thing it lacked was seasoning. If it had salt, Cajun or all purposes seasoning this side could have easily been the highlight of what I ordered.
I got a burger and a grilled cheese. Both were good.
