It isn’t that I am a sucker for fast food, but I do love fish and chips and the opportunity to find a good place for battered and fried fish is always going to grab my attention even if it is a fast food place. I mean, I would really like Long John Silvers, if they didn’t have so much salt in their batter. And now that the wonderful Scottish fish and chips place in Katy is no longer and the opportunity to drive to Kemah doesn’t present itself that often, I like to do searches when places become known to me in Houston. Of course we all know how good the Red Lion is and how good KP‘s Kitchen is. But there must be more places.Thus my search for fast food or fast, casual options. So today took me to the western part of Westheimer to try a place called Whales Fish and Chicken. Ghibli options are swai, tilapia, catfish, whiting, snapper, grouper. I opted for grouper ( $17.31). I could have done coni or a lunch special but didn’t catch those options until after. Combo would be the first three. Lunch special for about $12 would be 1 fish, 5 shrimp, 2 wings.
Taste. Cornmeal type batter like for catfish, not a fish and chips batter. Clean, not greasy. Much like that Louisiana Foods batter mix but not as salty. Grouper very clean tasting. Enjoyable. Based on cornmeal batter, I would default to catfish next time. Good remoulade and hot sauces.
I liked it. Still in search of a fish and chips batter though. Served with bread but they don’t know that, historically, fish would be ON TOP of the bread or toast to catch the frying oil like a paper towel lol.
Very friendly staff. Greeted me and thanked me upon leaving.
Unplanned benefit. Right across the street is a huge thrift store that I did not know about.

Delicious Food & Great Service!
Delicious food, was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The fish, chicken and shrimp was perfectly crispy and flavorful. I got the extra piece of snapper and it was very meaty and great taste. The fries were golden and crispy, hush puppies flavor was so good and the corn nuggets also tasted yummy. Everything came out quickly.
The staff was friendly and made sure everything was right with our order. The portions were generous, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. If you’re looking for great comfort food done right, this is the place to go.
Highly recommend – I’ll definitely be coming back!

Stopped by Whales Fish & Chicken during lunch today, while I was in the area and had an excellent experience. I ordered their Lunch #1 and the food was fresh, hot, and very flavorful. Everything was cooked perfectly with great seasoning, crispy texture, and generous portions for the price.
The restaurant itself was very clean, organized, and professionally run. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the staff provided great service — friendly, attentive, and efficient from ordering to pickup.
You can tell they take pride in their quality and customer experience. I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I’m nearby. Highly recommended.

Finally found a place where the chicken is fried right! I got the #3 combo. The catfish was just mmmm Tastes better than expected. Fresh hot and delicious. Great service from the young man taking orders and the cook! Thank you.

I ate here like last week and had to come back again today. I ordered the combo #3, and I had enough food to come back and eat it later. The seasoning is really good that they sprinkle on the top. It is definitely worth every penny. Hey Lay girl thank you for your awesome service. She was cool and very helpful. Will definitely recommend if you want some good fried seafood. Don’t sleep on them, go inside.

We’ve passed Whale’s more times than I can count in our every day commute. We decided to give it a try today and I can’t believe we’ve been missing out on this spot for so long!
Our fish came out super hot and fresh. The seasoning dust on top was chefs kiss. The sauces that came with the food were really tasty— I had asked for tartar sauce but ended up not even using it after trying the orange sauce.
Also, customer service was exceptional. Everyone on staff was super kind and accommodating, even when things got busy.
We’re already planning to come back next Friday!!!

I had an amazing experience at this restaurant. The atmosphere was fantastic—clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The staff were incredibly friendly (Kentrell and T) and took the time to explain the menu since it was my first visit. The fish, chicken, and shrimp were all delicious, and the rice and beans complemented the meal perfectly. The slushie was refreshing and absolutely amazing. Their attention to detail made me feel right at home, and I can’t wait to return!

Kentrell has been a great individual to greet you when walking in. The food is amazing and seasoned very well. I just relocated to Houston from Boston and this has been my go to spot for fish since I’m pescatarian. Highly recommend for anyone in the area to stop by and grab a bite to eat. Make sure to ask for Trell he will definitely take good care of you.
