I’m a big fan of the Spice Box’s rotating, student-driven dining experiences. It’s not a place where you ever really know what you’re going to get, but when it’s done right, it’s fine dining at about fifty bucks a person, which is a solid price point these days. The best menus are inventive, cohesive, and delicious.
One caveat: almost everyone compiling a menu is so young that the specialty cocktails they come up with are often a bit less than stellar, unless it’s something hard to screw up like a hurricane. But you can always just order wine or stick with water.

I have gone to several themed 5-course meals here (all for a reasonable price). The restaurant is hosted by UIUC students in the Hospitality Management program who create a dining experience as their capstone project. The attention to detail and quality are second to none.

This restaurant is a great way to get to know up and coming chefs from UIUCs culinary and hospitality program. The ambiance and menu changes weekly as each senior in the program has one opportunity to design a menu and experience that is uniquely their own.
