Reviews
We were a party of 13, and they were able to accommodate every need we had. We were WOWed by their amazing cocktails, and loved every bite of their food. We had almost everything, soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees, with not one bad review from our party of 13.
Service was extraordinary, drinks and food came as it should, in a timely manner.
Can’t wait to hang out outside in the warmer months as they expanded and upgraded most of the outside area.
Complimentary valet parking was quick and needed as the weekends are busy.
My only question is will they bring back music?
Cooper’s Tavern occupies a massive 6,000-square-foot space near Harriman State Park, and from the moment you walk in, it’s clear someone spent serious money on the place. The atmosphere is polished, the space is impressive, and if you look hard enough, you might mistake it for the kind of Irish gastropub that actually delivers on the “gastro” part.
We started with the crispy Brussels sprouts, which were legitimately fantastic—easily the high point of the meal. Then things took a turn.
I ordered the CT Smash Burger with bacon, which was…fine. Above average at best, which is a generous way of saying it tasted like every other smash burger you’ve had in the last two years.
My family got the pan-seared salmon and the beef and Guinness pot pie. The salmon was mediocre at best—overcooked, under-seasoned, forgettable.
The pot pie was average, which in a place billing itself as elevated pub fare is basically a polite way of saying “why bother?”
Dessert was a chocolate lava cake that arrived looking photo-ready but tasting like it had been shipped in from a Sysco warehouse and microwaved with hope.
And the service? Let’s just say our server seemed personally offended that we showed up.
Here’s the thing: Cooper’s feels like someone did the math on Sloatsburg—large space, limited competition, captive audience near the park—and decided atmosphere would be enough to carry subpar execution. The bones are there. The location is solid. But when you’re charging gastropub prices and delivering Applebee’s-adjacent food with service that suggests the staff would rather be literally anywhere else, you’ve got a problem.
This place has all the ingredients to be excellent, but right now it feels like a cash grab aimed at people who don’t have better options nearby.
If they tighten up the kitchen, train the front-of-house, and start taking the “gastropub” label seriously, Cooper’s could be great. Until then?
Save your money and drive somewhere that actually cares.
The food was superb, with the sole exception of the wings – good, but forgettable. The Spinach/Artichoke dip might be the best I’ve ever had, including the puffy-yet-crisp toast points. The crispy brussels sprouts were well seasoned but not at all greasy, and the flat bread pizzas were just extraordinary (highly recommend the Bee Sting!)
Beer selection is not bad, though I’d love to see a couple more ciders on tap – given the increasing availability of great local NY cidery’s, I’d expect to see something other than just Angry Orchard.
Prices overall were quite reasonable. Four strapping lads managed 5-6 rounds and beers and several rounds of shared plates, while still somehow managed to stay under $250!
Overall, Cooper’s is a locals joint that would encourage one to become, well, local…
