I tried the spinach empanada and the beef Abuela Chona empanada. The dough was tasty but a bit greasy. I thought the beef empanada was bland and did not have much spice. The spinach empanada tasted like a Greek spanakopita.

Great place for empanadas! Love going to the food carts with my friends and decided to try this place for the first time. They have a great selection of empanadas and they are all really yummy! I had the chicken empanadas and it can be a snack or a whole meal! It had great flavors and was made fresh when I got there. Their alfajor is also a great dessert option. The lady working the cart was really nice and really attentive. Would definitely go back.

Tried Abuela Chona for the first time and omg these breakfast empanadas are insane. I got the egg, ham, and cheese one and it was so fresh and packed with flavor — the crust was buttery and flaky, not greasy at all. My friend got the espinaca with egg topping and I stole a bite (ok maybe two) and it was just as good. You can tell everything’s made with care, totally worth the drive to Hillsboro. Definitely my new go-to for Argentine food

Empanada forward menu offering decent food and flavors. As another review states, the dough was a bit greasy; to me it was too close to philo or other pastry to have the crispy element empanadas need to contrast the filling. The chimichurri was also a bit under seasoned, but paired well with the beef. Our favorite by far was the beef, the chicken was disappointing. It takes a good 15 minutes for preparation, which was longer than other carts if you want to eat at the same time as friends. Important to note the first time we came here they were out of every meat option by 6pm, hopefully this was a case of recently opening and not having all of the needs lined up.

My suggestion: get an entree somewhere else in the food cart pod and grab an empanada for an appetizer.

The empanada was good. I had the choripan sandwich for $8: a 4″ piece of chorizo & bread nothing else. Inside the BG Food Cartel

Abuela Chona was amazing! We used them for a large luncheon for 80 people and they produced beautiful and fresh empanadas for our event. Really great with communication!
5/5 would recommend and plan to frequent there for lunch again soon!

OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE!!! And the food…meh. I can’t imagine this restaurant staying in business much longer with an $8.50/empanada. And I’m not sure what part of Argentina the owner is from but who puts yellow cheese in a jamón con queso empanada!?!? We brought my daughter here to celebrate her 22nd birthday. We contemplated leaving as soon as we saw the prices on the menu. But we are Argentinian and we were eager to finally try this place out. We ordered wine, a charcuterie board, French fries that tasted like nothing and a variety of empanadas ($167 for 4 people). The only empanadas that were decent in taste were the chorizo and criolla. The corn, spinach, and jamón con queso were horrible! And when I asked the server what the little dish with a greenish dip was, I couldn’t believe she said it was chimichurri. That was the worst chimichurri I have ever had! If you want good Argentine cuisine, go to Alecocina food truck in Hillsboro! This place is a rip off and the food is horrible.

AMAZING FOOD, AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE !!

Abuela Chona has THE BEST empanadas. My husband and I love to visit here and get the chicken empanadas and papas. We have been following Abuela Chona since they started at the Hillsboro Farmers Market and they have never disappointed us. The food here is made with so much love, care and time. You are definitely paying for the quality of food because they do take time to prepare. The lady that works there is always friendly and positive even when she is backed up with orders. Today she went above and beyond with the service she provided. We had been accidentally charge for 2 extra empanadas but right away the situation was fixed with more than we could have expected.

Nothing but praises for this team and for always making our day! It is always a treat 🙂
