TL;DR: Nothin’ Fancy is absolutely worth the trip: Good food, good value!
Don’t let the name fool you—Nothin’ Fancy may be a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot on GA 234 in Leary, but it delivers big on flavor. My mom had been talking about it for months before I finally decided to give it a try. Glad I did.
We both ordered the catfish and oyster plate, and it was a winner. The catfish was freshly fried, piping hot, and seasoned just right—full of flavor without overpowering the fish. The oysters were perfectly cooked—tender but not chewy, which is how I know if the cook in the back knows what he’s doing. I paired mine with creamy cheese grits, and we split an order of crispy onion rings. Yes, it’s Southern comfort food and yes, it’s fried but somehow it all came out light and never greasy. Also, each item tasted as it should, ie the onion rings didn’t taste like fish and the grease didn’t taste like it had been in the fryer for hours.
And the lemonade? Served in a massive glass and easily one of the highlights of the meal.
The service strikes that perfect balance: attentive, friendly, and never hovering. Clearly they’ve been there for a while because they knew the names of the regulars and recognized my mom, who had only been stopping there for a few months.
If you’re anywhere near Leary, make the stop.

First time eating here and I see why its always crowded. The food was delicious. A bit on the pricey side compared to other catfish houses that had bigger filets and I was surprised that there wasn’t any whole catfish on the menu. Other than that it was a great experience and would come again!

Fried whole catfish and fried shrimp combo plate was delicious. We had a piece of homemade butter pecan cake afterward. It was DEVINE! Always friendly service. We have eaten here several times in the past. It’s a long way out in the middle of nowhere, but it kind of makes it unique in it’s on way.

I love the familiar and homely feeling this place gives me. It’s like getting together at Grandma’s dinner table waiting on your favorite meal. The food is always cooked fresh, not too greasy or heavy on the batter and there is a pickle bar to snack on while you wait. This is a very laid back and easy going environment, definitely a wonderful place to catch up with friends. The fried pickles are to die for, can’t find anything like it in the city!

The Fish could have been seasoned a little (or a lot) more, but a little hot sauce did the trick. The texture of the crust on the fried catfish fillets was the PERFECT CRUNCH. The friend okra was great, and with the addition of some salt and pepper, the cheese grits were really good. When they say NOTHIN FANCY, they MEAN Nothin Fancy, but it’s NO DOUBT worth a try!!
