Reviews
If that is your first time, I highly recommend trying: Pabellon empanada, Papita de Yuca con queso, and the Pollo/Chicken.
Here is everything we ordered: (E) is Empanada and (P) is Pastelitos.
– (E) Papa con Queso/Potato with Cheese: it is OK, it didn’t have distinct taste
– (E) Camaron – Shrimp: it was OK, had more flavor than the potato and cheese one
– (E) Pabellon: it was excellent must try
– (P) Pollo/Chicken: we ordered the Pastelitos version. I loved the chicken, I didn’t care for the dough, I will try it in an empanada next time.
– Papita de Yuca con queso – Cheese Yucca papita: that was a favorite!! It was really good and flavorful.
– Aguita de sapo/Pork fried arepa: it was impossible to eat and I didn’t like the pork. The only highlight was the fried cheese which tasted like Halloumi fried cheese.
– Tequeñongo: it was good but I wouldn’t be in a rush to order it again
– Jugo de Tamarindo/Tamarind Smoothie: it was really good. Probably gets too much for one person but very tasty
– Mandocas: it was like fried dough, it wasn’t sweet at all. It was good.
I truly wanted to love this place. I tried it on four different occasions, spending over $30 for two people each time, hoping to feel that taste of home we seek when we miss Venezuelan food. Unfortunately, I left with a full stomach… and an empty heart.
Service:
Even before the self-order kiosk, customer service was poor: no greeting, no “good morning,” no “welcome.” With the kiosk, it became worse. There is no human interaction at all. They hand empanadas and pastelitos together without labeling or explaining which flavor is which.
Food:
Empanadas (almost $4 each): yes, they are crunchy due to pilado corn dough, but not in a good way. They are over-fried, hard, and very greasy, which aligns with other reviews calling them “stiff empanadas.”
Pastelitos (almost $3 and very small): several came overly fried. The ham and cheese pastelito had one slice of ham and one slice of cheese, and the cheese wasn’t even melted.
Meats: repeatedly over-salted.
Garlic sauce: thick with herbs (possibly parsley), but extremely salty and unpleasant. It does not represent authentic Venezuelan garlic sauce.
Tequeños: taste like frozen supermarket products. Sad that this is the most acceptable item.
Price vs satisfaction:
I have spent over $30 here more than once, and I never left satisfied. I make better empanadas and pastelitos at home, with more love and better flavor. This place doesn’t satisfy a Venezuelan craving — it harms it.
Identity and culture:
I am not from Zulia, I am from eastern Venezuela. But if a business carries the name “Tierra Zuliana,” it must honor it. This food does not represent our roots, nor bring pride… it brings sadness.
I am giving it 2 stars because this business could still be saved if it actually listens to reviews and cares enough to improve. But to be honest, after four attempts, I would not return.
I was born and raised as a Zuliana. And let me tell you, the food from this establishment is hands down, one of the most authentic I’ve ever tried here in the United States. Service is always excellent, and despite Venezuelan food is usually expensive, their prices are very reasonable.
I am so grateful that they decided to open a space for people who are homesick like me. This is my go-to place for Venezuelan comfort food.
I congratulate every single one of the employees of this business as well as Gustavo you don’t imagine the change you’ve made here for austin foodies.
Guanabana—hard to find anywhere, and delicious
Passionfruit (parchita) — delicious, must be super fresh bc it tastes better than any other parchita that I ever tried
I know there’s good food here too but for today’s review I’m just focusing on the juice.
