Reviews
Spicy pineapple mocktail – 5/5 delicious
Espresso martini – 4/5 good nothing special
Tomato bisque – 2/5 too sour
Steak and potatoes – 5/5 so much food, 14oz of steak is a lot to eat in one sitting. I got mine medium well. The steak was topped with spinach which felt like a random choice but okay. I would have liked the potatoes better with ketchup, something more acidic than the default aioli to cut through the heaviness of the whole dish
Basque cheesecake – 4/5 less burnt than I expected, which meant less texture variety. It was just soft and fluffy. It was still good and came with ice cream, a solid end to a decadent meal
The venue, while architectural poetry, does suffer from limited patronage, which is slightly perplexing given its potential. Walking into such a beautifully-crafted space, I anticipated a culinary experience mirroring its decor. Unfortunately, that wasn’t entirely the case.
Take their Fried Chicken Sammy for instance. It felt more like a modest slider than a hearty sandwich. The chicken was a bit on the dry side and lacked the rich flavors. However, the pickled jalapeño and kimchi gave it a redeeming tangy boost. The Prop & Peller Pretzel also felt unexceptional and overly dense. While I admired the honey mustard, the pairing with pickled vegetables felt slightly misaligned with the pretzel experience.
On the bright side, their Fish & Chips was better. The fish, ensconced in a delicately seasoned batter, paired harmoniously with the house remoulade and coleslaw. The fries added a satisfying crunch, rounding off the dish quite well.
While Locke Bar dazzles with its atmosphere, there’s room for growth on the culinary front. It’s an ideal spot if you’re in the mood for a chill evening, but temper your food expectations.
First, my fish and chips were delicious. Moist flaky beautiful fish with a light tartar sauce. Definitely a winner. Fries are also very yummy.
I did get to try the falafel. I’m not going to deny, it was more dense than I enjoy and it’s not my favourite by far. The other item that was ordered was the grain bowl. As seen in the picture it has much less grain than most places that offer a grain bowl. Ordered beware but by all accounts was very yummy.
I think my main problem with Locke bar if I decided to go of my own volition and money, is the pricing. My fish was $26 with 2 pieces of fish. When comparing to my peers getting san which es or salads with no add ons it was a full $10 difference. I’m very conscientious of my ratios and all the other options were high carb or I’d need to add a $6 protein add on. I do believe my portion and quality was fair but I wish there were lean protein focused alternate options comparable to the sandwiches in price.
Overall would go again either for after work drinks in the area or for a work function, but I’ll avoid the $30 tab for lunch.
