Really disappointed with the quality of food for the price, veg and potatoes were stored in moist hot trolleys. Meaning potatos were wet and soggy, veg was all soggy, I personally like these crispy. Beef wasn’t amazing hard to chew and loads of fat, gammon on the other hand was really good.
Service was brilliant, staff were very attentive and engaging with us. Lovely setting but yeah overall it’s not worth the money not that we paid. But felt there is miles better value out in the surrounding area.
Starters are buffet-style and genuinely excellent — a superb selection and everything I tried tasted lovely. Desserts are also a highlight, with plenty of choice and really nice quality.
Unfortunately, the main course carvery is the weak point. The carver we had was miserable, and regardless of who’s serving, the portions of meat are very stingy — just two small cuts. For a 4-star hotel, I am always amazed (and disappointed) to be served frozen roast potatoes. If you’re coming for a classic Sunday roast, you’ll likely leave underwhelmed.
Verdict: Don’t choose this place for a Sunday lunch alone — you’d be better off going to a Toby or a Stonehouse. But if you love great starters and sweets, and can accept a below-standard carvery, then it might still be the right fit.
We had the 3 course Sunday lunch and I was pleasantly surprised that it was all self serve buffet style.
All food was immaculately presented and tasted amazing. The beef was the best I’ve ever tasted and you can have as many slices as you wish!!
Staff are attentive and pop round as soon as you have finished your plates to take away any unwanted items.
Thanks for a brilliant meal for our 1st wedding anniversary!
Breakfast: The breakfast here is really expensive for what is essentially a buffet sat around. The coffee is filter in a pot and if you want a latte or something like this then you have to pay £5.35 for the drink on top of the breakfast price. It’s not a large drink either, or a good one. There weren’t any vegan options out, asides from fruit or toast. So I had to ask for a vegan yogurt and some vegan sausages. Otherwise the buffet contained things you’d have in a full English such as bacon sausages eggs etc. The bread was SO bad, I can’t believe they’d serve such cheap sandwich bread. You’re paying about £18.50 for so little. I tried some tinned peach and watermelon, which was fine. I’d rather pay for an a la carte breakfast (even at 18.50 and have nice bread and freshly cooked items). Having everything sat around in containers and pre made with terrible coffee is just a joke for such a ‘nice’ establishment. We had to queue to get in, queue to check out the containers which were full of greasy items sat around. There were no dairy free or vegan pastries, which they thought there might be (but both days there weren’t). A couple of the waitresses were complaining here and there, which was just awkward to listen to as I tried to enjoy my underwhelming over priced breakfast. I would give this place 1/5 stars for breakfast.
Dinner: The buffet did not contain vegan options, but they do have a vegan menu! The dishes lack protein, for eg they do a curry with cauliflower – why not use chickpeas? Tofu? Tempeh? But, at least they do have this. If you don’t want the buffet, then you can use the money towards a la carte. On one night we had the buffet, and it was all ok. I guess I went at the wrong time as the food wasn’t topped up, so I had the scraps of a dish that were left but the flavours were nice and the quality – if not a little over done by being sat there heated. The other night we ordered a la carte and waited an HOUR for our food and twenty five minutes for a drink. We then were told we couldn’t pay at our table so queued at the entrance to pay, we stood waiting for about 15 minutes and eventually got to pay. They didn’t care about the service or our experience. The food was 4/5 stars, but let down by the long wait and service. The prices are expensive, so the service needs to be there.
It was a particularly busy Sunday with a large wedding going on but this didn’t affect our meal – just a challenge to get seats in the bar afterwards!
We were a table of 13 and they put us on a long table next to the desserts so a good location and easy access to the food. We ordered drinks and these took longer than I expected to arrive. When we were convinced all our party had their drinks we set off for the starters buffet. Probably the best part of the meal – lovely selection of seafood, salads, etc.
3 meats were on offer at the carvery and you are served an average rather than large portion. Meat cooked beautifully. Good selection of vegetables and pleased to see thickish gravy this time (always used to be too thin!).
Desserts were OK rather than great – a selection of individual portions and a nice cheese selection on the other side of the restaurant.
At £39.95 plus 10% service charge (for what?!) it’s an expensive Sunday lunch. The food is better than a typical Sunday carvery but I think it’s starting to feel only average value for money (it’s gone up from £34.95 earlier in the year).
Having said that it’s a special place and it was a great location to celebrate my Moms 90th birthday.
