The service was fast, and the waitresses were friendly. We got coffee, and they serve it to you in a French press! Talk about strong!
Our food came out in record time! But it was fresh and all our dishes were as advertised! There is a full bar as well.
Parking? A Headache!
There’s no on-site parking — it’s valet only, and they don’t validate, which means you’re stuck paying $15+ just to park. Definitely not budget-friendly!
The Food? Meh.
After waiting a few minutes, we got seated. The menu had potential, but sadly, the dishes we tried were just average at best. Nothing that made us go “wow” or feel like it was worth the price.
Not Worth the Splurge
Between the parking fee, the underwhelming food, and the extra charges, this stop just didn’t feel worth it.
We won’t be returning — there are way better spots in DTLA with good vibes and better value.
We went for a quick brunch. The atmosphere is great, calming and homey, and the servers were very polite and apt. The food was okay. My mom enjoyed the chicken sandwich. I had the English breakfast which was filling, but basic. I was interested in the Grilled Avocado, but it came out as normal and not grilled at all…
It was still an enjoyable time, we will definitely be back to try lunch and dinner.
Their outside patio was lovely and the weather was perfect today finally and somehow I was the only person sitting alfresco. Very strange. Anyways, I ordered the Denae’s Slam as a splurge as I was having a late breakfast. The price is listed on the menu as $18, the server told me I had multiple options for the bread, but did not disclose it was an extra fee to get the biscuit. Obviously I chose the biscuit because I was feeling naughty BUT if I had known it was going to be a $3 up charge I obviously would not have gotten it! I hate it when servers do this, just be straight up or have it literally listed on the menu under the item description so there is no confusion.
Food was luckily tasty and decent portion which is why I still gave this place 4 stars. I got the chicken sausage and it came with 3 pieces, the biscuit thankfully was yummy and they gave the cute little individual size Bonne Maman jams and honey as well.
I got attentive service, other people checked in on me when my server had to take a break. But like I said was not a huge fan of being duped by the up charge of the biscuit. They also have that 5% surcharge which I find annoying in general (I thought this was banned?)- please build it into your cost or pay living wages like other countries so the customer doesn’t have to foot this.
I would recommend this place if you are okay with overpaying, luckily the food and ambience kind of made up for it.
When I inquired about the administrative surcharge, the waitress, who was very helpful and friendly, stated it was to cover the restaurants extra expenses. She suggested that I could simply take it out of her tip. I refused to do that; it wasn’t her fault that the management decided to implement such a deceptive practice. Ultimately, she was able to remove the admin fee and I ended up tipping her a good amount plus the administrative fee to ensure she wasn’t penalized for the restaurant’s choices.
Still, I felt it should have been disclosed upfront, especially considering the high coffee price. It seems like a sneaky tactic that many might overlook. In today’s economy, we need to be vigilant about these hidden charges that businesses often impose, thinking they can get away with it without any pushback. It’s frankly frustrating, and I won’t be returning. Run a transparent business when it concerns my money and you will likely see me again. Try to take my money for nothing and this $1.20 cost you a lot more. I stay across the street at the Weston 3 times a week on my layover for my job and I wont be back at your restaurant.
The entire atmosphere is so fun with an old style diner experience and their food is equally amazing with tasty twists to all the classics.
Start off your experience with an offer of tap, spring or sparkling water. Don’t forget the $5 mimosas or their French press coffee.
I got the black Dahlia which was a French toast topped with almond brittle, blueberries and blueberry sauce. To say it delicious is an incredible understatement. We will likely be back for lunch and breakfast again tomorrow.
You don’t want to miss out on this gem.
