Torisoba Sumiya: Experience Unique Charcoal Grilled Chicken …
Reviews
Rich Chicken Ramen – The ramen is chicken broth based. It had a rich creamy paitan based broth. I had to order firm noodles to enjoy it. Large size will be 1.5x noodles at same price but you’ll just have less broth maybe? I think overall it was decent offering.
BBQ Chicken Bowl – that is what I enjoyed more. It was yakitori I recall from my frequent Japan trips.
Parking is free with validation in the basement parkade.
The charcoal chicken here is unlike anything else in LA. Sharp, smoky, and instantly nostalgic—it echoes the BBQ chicken I grew up eating at family gatherings at Chase Park in MDR. The one element I’d dial back is the small blackened charcoal bits, which add more bitterness than I prefer, but the chowder-style broth brings everything back into balance.
The broth—almost a chicken “chowder”—is the definition of healing food. Creamy in texture yet still clear and clean, with a depth built on technique rather than heaviness. The noodles are excellent: firm, well-prepared, and clearly high quality.
What really sets the experience apart is the staff. There’s real care and professionalism in how they run the shop, and you can feel the pride behind delivering a humble, thoughtful bowl of ramen.
The ambiance is simple and modern, with art tied to the restaurant’s name and roots. Easy, comfortable, and quietly distinctive.
A standout spot for a refined, chicken-driven bowl that feels both nostalgic and new—capturing Tokyo’s ability to make something modern while still honoring tradition.

FOOD 5/5
Amazing smokey and char flavor throughout the ramen!
– Japanese BBQ chicken ramen $21.00 LARGE BOWL
– Chili spicy rich chicken REGULAR BOWL
AMBIENCE 3/5
Tight small space and the bar seating is spacious enough and/or if you’re with a party of 3 or 4.
Coming as a pair you might be seated arms length next to another table and for me it’s way too close. Haha
PARKING 4/5
Easy parking in the new parking structure in the back. Expect to pay $5.00
I think it’s 30 mins fee
SERVICE 3/5
Decent service and I’ll leave it at that
Woah is me, as it’s my problem and of course not any of the ramen shops fault. All of this long windedness is to say that Sumiya is actually worth the price as they offer something very unique to the LA ramen scene. As a torisoba shop you get the slightly lighter chicken ramen but it still has depth of flavor and a pleasant creaminess that is complimented by the host made noodles. But what really sets them apart from everyone else is the degree of smokiness that is imbued into the dish from the charcoal grilled chicken and thick scallions. Game changer. Spice it up with the yuzu kosho if you need a break from the richness and/or smoke.
If you are looking to change up your ramen routine, or are tired of all the porkiness, or haven’t been getting enough of a flavor punch, Torisoba Sumiya is a delight for any true ramen lovers out there.
The only thing to know about this place is that the tables are first come first serve. You will have to wait outside while you’re waiting to grab a table.
The menu features three main types of ramen as well as rice bowls, which can also be ordered as sets. The broth is lighter than tonkotsu but still rich in chicken flavor, paired with thin noodles that complement the soup well. The Japanese BBQ Chicken Ramen stands out with its smoky, chargrilled flavor, while the Pure Rich Chicken Ramen is more refined and mild, making it a great option for children or those who prefer a delicate taste. The spicy ramen was flavorful without being overwhelmingly hot. A highlight was the yuzu kosho condiment, recommended by the staff it pairs perfectly with the grilled chicken and provides a refreshing change of flavor. Overall, it was a satisfying experience with a balance of quality, atmosphere, and originality.
If you’re reading this: congratulations! Stop scrolling stop searching…you have FOUND your new favorite ramen spot.
Chicken broth ramen and karrage (friend chicken) both were to DIE for…we are so lucky to have authentic restaurants like this in LA!
The broth was luxuriously rich yet clean, packed with deep umami that lingers without being heavy. The noodles had excellent bite, and the tender chicken chashu was cooked just right. The seasoned egg was a highlight — creamy and flavorful. Everything was balanced and thoughtfully put together. Hands down one of the best chicken-based ramen bowls I’ve tried.
I also tried the Charcoal Grilled Chicken Don — it was solid, with good char and flavor, but didn’t wow me the way the ramen did. Next time I’d come back just for the ramen.
Friendly service and comfortable space — a perfect spot when you want a quality bowl without the crazy waits some other Sawtelle places have.
If you’re looking to explore beyond tonkotsu, this is an excellent place for chicken ramen in LA. I’ll definitely be returning for that broth!
