A few years back we opened The Shack next to a gas station on Hwy 550. Some called it Crane’s, some the bus stop, but everyone who came knew they would most likely be greeted by (For 40+ years) none other than Melba. Many stopped for gas, a tan, or a bus ticket- but many stopped by just for a visit. Not long after the shack was added, time came for Melba (My Mom) to retire and I move the restaurant into the old gas station. With 2 buildings, we have adjusted and learned along the way. The small little shack still sits next door, but it was time to give the old store a new face. The main restaurant, Melba’s Place invites you to come on in, have a meal and perhaps share some of your stories about Melba. To know her is to love her.

Pulled off the highway looking for something to eat, was lucky enough to stumble across this place. The food was fantastic and it was priced super reasonably. I had the fried shrimp, hush puppies, and fries. It was excellent. Met the owner, Calvin, he’s a really nice guy. I was by myself and he sat down with me and we had a nice discussion. This place is a well kept secret. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff (Jasmine) . I ordered the catfish and shrim with sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries are served with marshmallow dipping sauce. Yummy . I definitely will be making this a regular pit stop when I’m in the city of Brookhaven.

I wanted something different and tonight is the first time I’ve ever been to The Shack at 550. I ordered shrimp queso dip which was delicious and the tortilla chips are easily some of the best I’ve ever had. I also got a shrimp creole wrap. I didn’t like it as much. I’ve never had one before. It was alright for a wrap, but it had an herbaceous flavor that I didn’t care for. That may be normal for creole seasoning. I tried one of my son’s blackened shrimp. It was shockingly salty. He said it felt like getting punched. The staff was great. Quick pickup order I took home to eat in front of the TV.

Melba’s Place is the best restaurant in Brookhaven! The food is delicious, seafood o fresh and delicious and the staff and owner are lovely! Sylvia was very attentive to us and gave us good recommendations. Will definitely be back!

It was my first time going here, I was with a group of 8. It wasn’t very busy, but the food took roughly an hour to come out and crab claws which was a persons meal took an extra 20/25 minutes to come. The waitress really didn’t come check on us, we had to flag her down to get to go boxes. We sat right in-front of the ac unit so the whole meal we all froze. But seemed like a friendly environment and would like to try it out again.
