La Gruta offers a truly unique dining experience—it’s not every day you get to eat inside a cave. If you’re visiting the Pyramids, this is a great option for lunch or dinner once you’re done exploring. The space is beautiful and thoughtfully designed, creating a memorable atmosphere. The food was fresh, flavorful, and genuinely delicious.
That said, it’s important to note that the prices are quite high by Mexican standards, so I wouldn’t describe it as affordable. If you’re willing to pay extra for the experience, you likely won’t regret it. On the other hand, if you’re budget-conscious and decide to skip it, you probably won’t feel like you missed out either. Enjoy!

If you are in or planning a trip to Teotihuacan, you absolutely must have breakfast or lunch at La Gruta.
We arrived very early, before 9 am, after our hot air balloon ride, and it was excellent because there were very few people.
It’s not just about eating; it’s a whole experience you have to have.
The place is beautiful, the food is delicious (everything you eat is even better with freshly made corn tortillas), and the service is excellent.
We ordered an omelette with escamoles (ant larvae, mexican caviar), the huazontle tower with fresh cheese, chilaquiles with cecina (dried, salted beef), and of course, the barbacoa. Everything was delicious, especially with their manzano chili and xoconostle (prickly pear) salsa.
To drink, we had freshly squeezed orange juice and café de olla (Mexican-style coffee).
Important point… the bathrooms are super clean!!!
I lived in Mexico City for over 40 years, been to Teotihuacan more than 10 times, and I’d never been to La Gruta. I thought it was a new restaurant, but it turns out it’s nearly 100 years old!
I was told it’s best to have breakfast there or make a reservation for lunch because it gets incredibly crowded.

La Gruta is such a unique and memorable experience — a full restaurant set inside a natural cave! We made a quick stop here during our Teotihuacan tour. To get there, you exit through Door 5 and cross the street.

Because of our tour schedule, we only had time for drinks and dessert, but we were so glad we made it. I really enjoyed the chocolate cake and my mango margarita. Prices were pretty reasonable.

A big shoutout to our server — despite our limited Spanish, he immediately understood we were in a rush and was incredibly accommodating. His attentiveness made the short visit even better.

At the end of your meal, they give you a candle to place on an altar inside the cave. We didn’t have enough time to learn the full significance or spiritual meaning, but I used the moment to give thanks for the wonderful experiences we’ve had in Mexico City.

Even if you can only stop briefly, it’s definitely worth visiting. I’d love to return someday with more time to enjoy a full meal!

Visiting the Teotihuacán pyramids was an unforgettable experience, but our dinner at La Gruta made the day truly magical. This restaurant is absolutely gorgeous—like stepping into a scene from a movie. The cave setting, the decor, and the ambiance make everything feel even more special. The staff welcomed us with warm smiles and incredible service. The food was something else—especially the Arrachera (skirt steak), along with delicious drinks and desserts. Everything was amazing! My wife and I had an absolute blast dining here after exploring the pyramids. I wish Google allowed more than 5 stars… I would give them more if I could! A must-visit experience.

La Gruta isn’t just a restaurant where you go to eat food, pay, and leave; it’s an experience. This is why I think it deserves 5 stars. From the moment you pass the little rock windows looking down into cave, it is a breathtaking experience.
The history behind the place is interesting so be sure to check it out by scanning the qr code on the menu.
The food itself was good, beautifully presented, fresh ingredients, however I did not find it to be worth the price.
The staff was friendly but felt excessive waiting times and overheard one waiter cursing at another.
But as a whole, you can justify the price by thinking of it as you are paying for the location, the history, and the experience.

The food is absolutely delicious, every bite was good and very representative of the Mexican cuisine. Their salsas are also very unique and spicy. We couldn’t make it to dessert but I definitely recommend the place if you’re coming to Teotihuacán ♥️

We were in Mexico City exploring and decided to visit the famous Teotihuacán pyramids. After a long morning of walking and taking in the sights, we stumbled upon La Gruta a restaurant we had heard so much about and decided to give it a try.

The experience was incredible! The restaurant is located right within the pyramid compound, so you can explore and then enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner just steps away from history. We went for brunch around noon, and everything was amazing from the ambiance to the food and drinks.

I highly recommend trying the Gruta mole by far the best mole I’ve ever had! The café de olla was exceptional too.

A restaurant in a cave lit by candles. Didn’t make reservation, I just walk-in. No expectations of the food thinking it will be just an experience to have lunch inside a cave after visiting Piramides Teotihuacan. But actually I like the food, especially the Molcajete La Gruta (guacamole).
Just 15 mins walk from exit 5 next to Pyramid of the Sun, highly recommend.

This place is such a unique dinning experience. The service and food are good but the location/atmosphere are out of this world. The decorations inside and out were breathtaking.
