I went there by myself to celebrate the end of my first semester at Del Mar.
I splurged quite a bit and had myself a feast. Cost me $41 (15% of which was my tip).
When I tell you that feast was worth every penny, I mean it.
There was not a single thing that wasn’t fantastic. It was all very very tasty and fresh. All of the foods were new to me, and I loved them all.
The staff were all extremely extremely kind, welcoming, and helpful. Their service was delightful and they were all lovely to talk to while ordering.
I will be coming back for sure. Maybe not to feast like that because money doesn’t grow on trees (haha) but definitely will have a meal or some more of their yummy bubble tea.
If you get the opportunity to eat at Gogi Yaki, I hiiiighly recommend you at least give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.
As for the food, everything I have tried has been great. The food isn’t greasy and has great flavor, plus it always comes out fresh.
The staff was very friendly! The other dishes looked amazing. We will definitely be back. My only complaint, which isn’t a huge deal, was that the spicy chicken wasn’t very spicy. But they do have Sriracha packets.
Gogi Yaki is a Japanese-Korean fusion spot that offers a wide variety of dishes likely to satisfy your cravings from both ends of the spectrum. On our visit, we sampled the Beef Bulgogi, Chicken Teriyaki, Pork Bulgogi, the surprising Bulgogi Fries, and the unfortunately disappointing Chicken Gochujang Ramen Alfredo.
Let’s start with the portions — they’re generous, easily sharable or enough to leave you full if dining solo. That helps justify the slightly higher price point. The beef and pork bulgogi were flavorful and well-marinated, with decent quality meat. It wasn’t mind-blowing, but certainly satisfying. If you’ve had better, you’ll recognize it — but it’s far from a letdown.
Now for the standout: the Bulgogi Fries. This dish takes the idea of a bulgogi rice meal, swaps the rice for a mountain of fries, and tops it all with a drizzle of Japanese mayo. It’s indulgent, savory, and incredibly filling. Think loaded fries, but elevated with that sweet-salty bulgogi punch. Easily the highlight of the meal.
Unfortunately, the Chicken Gochujang Ramen Alfredo was a complete misfire. If you’ve ever had Shin Ramen, imagine draining it, tossing in the same flavor packet, some milk and cheese, and calling it a dish. It felt lazy, uninspired, and honestly a bit gimmicky. The flavor lacked depth, the texture was off, and the whole dish brought down the overall experience. It left the impression of a rushed fast-food experiment rather than a carefully thought-out fusion item.
Overall, Gogi Yaki shows promise — the staff are courteous, and there are dishes worth returning for, especially the Bulgogi Fries — but inconsistencies in execution hold it back. A solid 3-star experience that could’ve easily been a 4 or 5 if not for that ramen alfredo letdown.
12/2024 visit: Back again for the Chicken Bulgoki. I know they have lots of other cool dishes, but I had to get this again! Maybe next time I can venture further out along the menu.
Early 2024 visit: It had been too long since I had some good spicy Chicken Bulgoki, and GOGI YAKI did not disappoint. The meal comes with Miso soup and is served over a bed of white or black & white rice. I added a couple of fried egg rolls and a fountain soda, bringing the total to $22. The portion was large enough to have leftovers for lunch tomorrow! Check out their menu for other exciting options. The “spicy” option was perfect if you like a little kick, not too much. Skip that option if you prefer the milder taste.
I’ll be back soon to try some of their other dishes.
