The menu also stated that there was gluten free bread available for their sandwiches and it didn’t seem like there was an additional charge!
The Lawrenceville location is cozy and on the smaller side. The only thing I noticed during my visit is that some guests were reserving tables before placing their order at the counter, even though there are signs asking not to. This can make the experience a bit challenging for those waiting in line who still need a spot to sit after ordering.
Still, the food and drinks were excellent, and it remains one of my go-to breakfast spots in Pittsburgh 🙂
The food is superb. I like eating food that makes me feel good, and the food at Mediterra makes me feel good. I guarantee that anything that you order is going to be delicious. The portions are generous (I wear pants with room… lol…). Also, on Saturdays, they make pretzels and they’re huge and very tasty (my mom really likes the pretzels, too!). I am also not-so-secretly obsessed with the ham and cheese croissant (although, it’s popular, so you better come early to get one)… I could eat one of those every day! The chicken salad is also really tasty—better than the herbed egg salad (which is also really good), somehow…
The service is amazing—everyone is super kind and friendly! I love catching up with the lovely people there (I don’t know if I can name names, but you know who you are! ☺️). I think that it is one thing to have good food, but it’s another thing when the service matches the goodness of the food—that’s probably why the line can be so long that it’s almost out the door sometimes (usually in the Fall and Spring because more students are around and families aren’t vacationing!).
If you can stop by on a weekend this August, try the peach cheesecake croissant! It is incredible, and I might like it more than almond croissants (which are my favorite): it’s tangy and rich cheesecake with refreshing peaches all wrapped in a buttery and light croissant! That’s the croissant in the picture—also, please excuse Mickey’s tattered foot!
I ordered the breakfast sandwich and added avocado for a $4 upcharge, which makes for an almost $20 sandwich.
When my sandwich came out the fried egg was barely over-easy, with the yolk already broken and running everywhere, including the sides of the plate. My partner also order the breakfast sandwich (but with bacon) and her egg was more thoroughly cooked and the yolk was still intact.
While I prefer my yolks a little more set, and probably should have specified the eggs to be over-medium or over-hard, because the yolk was already broken and had ran everywhere I couldn’t just remove it and just eat the whites and the rest of the sandwich.
We politely asked a staff member if anything could be done, acknowledging that I should have specified that I wanted my eggs a little more set and explaining that the egg had already ran everywhere prior to me getting it, and their options were to either: pay $1 for another egg (which doesn’t address the fact that there was already yolk everywhere) or pay almost $20 for a new sandwich. I told them that neither of those options worked for me, so they took my sandwich that I had taken one or two small bites from, and I sat there while my partner finished her meal. Super disappointing considering how many times we’ve eaten at all of their locations and visitors we’ve brought in over the years.
On another recent visit we ordered food and 2 lattes. Our food came out and after 10 minutes our coffees still hadn’t arrived, so we asked someone about them. We were told they were backed up on coffees and they would be out shortly.
Fast forward 20 or so more minutes, we had finished our meals and we were still waiting for our coffees.
All told, we waited around 40 minutes for 2 lattes with no “sorry” or “our bad” or heads up when we ordered that they were backed up at the coffee station.
Overall, we love having this spot in our neighborhood, we’ve just had a few disappointing experiences on the service side lately.
The crookie is absolutely massive, and I love that the cookie isn’t just in the top but also in the croissant as well, though I think the drizzled chocolate is a bit much. Would definitely go with something a little less sweet next time! Unfortunately they didn’t have regular drip coffee when I went, but the Americano was solid, and their specialty drinks all looked good!
Definitely will be coming back to try their delicious food options and other pastries soon!
