Our waitress took the time to explain the different types of sushi and gave some great recommendations. We had a lychee martini and a sake martini, both of which were excellent. For food, we went with the steak hibachi and a sushi platter, and everything was cooked and prepared perfectly.
The entire square/plaza where Tomo is located feels like a little hidden gem with plenty of parking during the day. Definitely a spot worth visiting if you’re in the area.
The food was incredible! I got the sashimi dinner which was the most high quality sashimi I’ve ever gotten and one of the best portion sizing in the area. Presentation was absolutely stunning. Worth your $$ for sure! My boyfriend got the Golden Mango Shrimp which his mother and friends had raved about the day before. He said it was delicious and he would definitely get it again.
I cannot eat gluten and asked the waiter if a dish was breaded. He explained the dish finishing his sentence off with, “which is not gluten free” in a way that felt very comforting like it was not an inconvenience to help me find something safe. You dont get this 90% of the time dining out. Each time an appetizer or my dish came out, he told me it was gluten free (or it wasn’t when he didn’t bring it out) which made me feel safe knowing he kept that in mind throughout our experience.
We will definitely be coming back to Tomo. I wish I caught the waiter’s name because he sets a great example.
We’ve been here twice more since my last update, so suffice it to say, Tomo is now our go-to sushi spot. The quality of fish is nearly the best we’ve had outside of the city and cocktails are well-made. Because their pricing is comparable/slightly higher than other local places but for better quality fish, it’s hard to justify going elsewhere. I can’t speak to their hot food or cooked dishes because we only get sushi or raw items. My only recommendation is that it is tricky to go on a Friday or Saturday without a reservation so either plan ahead or expect to wait. On one Friday night visit, my husband and I were able to be seated right away but when we went back on another busy Friday night with our son, the restaurant was already packed so they offered to seat us at the sushi bar to avoid a 30 to 40 minute wait. I wasn’t a fan of sitting at the sushi bar as a family because it made it harder for us to interact plus we had less space than we would at a regular table plus it was a busy walkway behind us for staff.
**Update 2/23**
We’ve been here two more times and overall are really pleased with the quality of the fish. It’s one of the best local places we found in the area. The fish, particularly the Nigiri, is excellent quality. It’s nice to see offerings of high-quality options such as sea urchin and fatty tuna. I’ve dined at Michelin star sushi restaurants in Manhattan and am a sushi snob about local places but really love Tomo.
We’ve been wanting to try this place and finally stopped in for lunch last Saturday. Overall we had a really great visit. The restaurant itself is elegant and the service was attentive. We enjoyed the food and the sushi quality was better than what we typically find at most neighborhood places. Presentation was very good although I wasn’t personally a fan of the fish carcass on my sashimi platter. I do wish the fish temp was closer to room temp than cold, hence the deduction of a star. I’m curious to try their omakase but we’ll definitely visit again.
