We were very excited to try the vegan offerings. We are always in search of vegan restaurants. Upon arrival we were not greeted at all. As we were reviewing the menu the cook said “ can I just give him his order” as there was a gentleman standing behind us and we didn’t realize. I said “ yes of course “ and we stepped to the side. We placed our order, he asked if I could provide a Phone number to text when our food was ready. I said “of course” and provided the number. We stood in the lot and waited for the text advising our food was ready. We were standing there talking and didn’t notice the first text so there was a second text. The food did come out fairly quick. We went the window he opened the screen and handed the food out. Me and my wife both said thank you. We received no response back and he just shut the screen and walked away. First I thought that it was weird and unprofessional that he didn’t acknowledge us or thank us at all during our visit. We did leave a 20% tip. Not that, that should’ve garnered anything special. But a nice greeting and a thank you goes a long way when you’re in the customer service business.
Now for the actual food review. The cheezesteak was very good. There was abundance of fried pickles and they were good. The fried pickles were probably our favorite part of the meal. The roast peace sandwich was dry and could’ve used some more sauce. The fries were good but, there could’ve been a few more.
We gave a 2 star because the food was pretty decent. However the service was poor and we felt he was very rude. There’s so many vegan options in Tucson (see my other reviews) I’m not sure we will be giving substance diner another try.

Wish I came here sooner. This place is DELICIOUS. The seitan is cut so thin. It’s super flavorful. The bread on the TLT is perfection.
Cesar dressing A++++
Update. Have come back several times. This place is great. Seating at the brewery next door.

First time to Substance and it was really, really good. Me (not vegan) and wife (20yr vegan) got the spicy ‘chicken’, small fries, large kale salad and a chocolate shake and loved all of it!
The seitan chicken was super well cooked, spicy, crunchy, with pickles, tomatoes and shredded lettuce on a toasty sesame bun. Could use a little saucing up, we ordered a side of ranch
The fries were perfectly crispy and seasoned well with salt and pepper.
The kale salad was huge and fresh and the dressing (mustardy ranchy) was fab, but wish we had more cause it didn’t fully coat the large. Oh and the house croutons were nuts.
Cool spot in the back of Screwbean Brewery, where you can take your food to eat and grab a coffee, beer, cocktail. Will come back next time we are in Tucson ❤️

If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. I have to preface this by saying I live in Portland, Oregon, which is pretty much the gold standard for vegan food. I am not exaggerating when I say this was hands. down. the. best. vegan. food. I’ve had, like ever.
Between 3 of us, we got the fried chicken sandwich, Philly cheesesteak, and burger. I’m torn between the chicken sandwich and cheesesteak, and I wish we had had enough appetite to try everything on the menu.
The fried chicken was PERFECTLY crispy and densely textured, the sauce was ample and delicious, just perfection in a sandwich. And the soy curl based cheesesteak was tender and sloppy, just as it should be. The sauces, quality and quantity of the toppings, rival any 5 star restaurant I’ve been to anywhere else.
AH. MAZ. ING.
You might want to bring your own napkins though–the sheer messiness of these sandwiches will bring you to your knees in the best of ways.

Edit: this edit is in response to the owners response… Yes, I understand technology fails us from time to time, but the way the staff here treated me (and others, based on these reviews) leaves me to believe technology is not to blame for my bad experience. Your staff member made it clear it was OUR FAULT our order was not picked up expeditiously, and even though our number was used previously to confirm our order, it didn’t alert us that our order was ready for pick-up. If not for how poorly we were treated by the staff here we’d be regular customers; we are reasonable people, we understand technology has its limitations, but for ONE PERSON to ruin the entire experience says a lot about this place and what they’re willing to tolerate. [original review starts now] We visited this place this evening and the food was amazing. The customer service is the reason for 3 stars, not 5. We ordered the fried pickles and they were my favorite thing; they were crisp and just spicy enough and really, really good. We also ordered the roast peace sandwich and it was so flavorful and also really, really good. My husband had the Philly cheesesteak and he said it was very good, too. We both had fries and I don’t usually like steak fries but theirs were cooked to perfection so they were delicious. I can’t say enough good things about the food, but we won’t be back. The customer service was bad. I’m not talking about the wait time, which was about AN HOUR, we anticipated about 40 minutes. We waited so long because we never got a text that our order was ready. When my husband went up to the window he was just hanging out when the women working the window yelled out to him with a “yeah” and he said he was just waiting for his text, then she asked him his name/number and she said, very rudely back, “oh yeah, your order is ready, I texted you a while ago” and apparently between me ordering and my order being ready my number changed because I did get 2 texts after my order was placed. Weird. Very weird. There aren’t a ton of vegan options in this town and as much as I’d like this food again, I can’t stand poor customer service so I’ll gladly spend my money elsewhere. We got 2 sandwiches, 2 orders of fries and 1 appetizer and our order was $63 including a tip. Never again.

Some of the best vegan food not only in Arizona but the entire United States. This food is out of bounds delicious and served modestly from their food truck. You CANNOT miss this spot.
The ice cream shakes and vegan ranch are scary good. I can highly recommend everything in the menu.
Support this incredible local small business!

Absolutely to die for! The sandwiches were amazing. I had the Philly cheesesteak- and yes- all vegan! But please know- this food will excite anyone’s plate- you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy these flavorful sandwiches!

Substance makes the best veggie burger I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve gotten it several times, and it’s consistently perfect and worth the price. I’m also a huge fan of the fries, seasoned or plain.

Very good fries, but the menu is nearly all vegan. The menu is very polarized and not very accommodating to the general palate. They don’t have many options for kids. Prices are what you’d expect. Very cool diner truck and trailer. Server was accommodating. There really needs to be some meat options (eg chicken sandwich or real burger). It would also be nice if salad was an option.

One of my favorite vegan places in the state! I was going to say in town but it really is at the top there. This is definitely not fast food in the best way. Every meal I’ve had here has been amazing. I usually go for the substance burger with a side of diner fries and ranch. One of the best vegan ranch I’ve tried so far! Definitely give it a try if you are looking for a yummy vegan place. Just make sure to order a head of time. I think a 20-30 min wait is pretty normal. You call or place an order online.
