I’m a connoisseur of French Dip sandwiches and seek them out at any restaurant that offers them. While I usually enjoy them all, it takes something extraordinary to make me slow down just so I don’t miss a moment to savor the flavor.
That happened at Goochy Goo BBQ located inside the Smith & Edwards in Ogden, UT.
We’d dropped by–cause you simply have to stop and explore the mighty S&E store if you’re driving by–not expecting to find a living-room sized BBQ lunch place in the store’s center. The menu was definitely not commonplace. You can get ribs, funeral potatoes, macaroni & cheese, and French Dip (among many other items). There was one fellow cooking and one at the register. ~$32 for the items I mentioned. Not cheap, but not wildly expensive, either.
BBQd beef brisket and Swiss on an unassuming bun. Dark and meaty au jus in a small pastry tart tin. A simple presentation.
I didn’t expect the French Dip to be so shockingly delicious. It arrived (as you can see in the picture) on a quarter-sheet baking tray, the sandwich already soaked in au jus (I can’t tell if that was intentional or if I accidentally spilled on the way on the table, but either way it didn’t ruin the bread).
I won’t go all melodramatic explaining how delicious it was, but I’ll put it this way–it’s worth the hour drive just to get back for another.
And to the fellow who was dashing about the tiny kitchen in the middle of a gigantic sporting goods and military surplus store: Sir, you have the best tasting French Dip sandwich I have had in years. Thank you!
The soda machine wasn’t working but they immediately fixed it. They didn’t have all the sides, but the worker (Steve) was pretty chill and made the experience good
Will come again
