Today was a whole different case. No greeting. I sat myself. Not only did I sit myself, I sat there for 20 minutes before anyone said a word to me. As I sat I watched 2 Spanish guys walk I. And sit at the table behind me. They were greeted with a basket of buttered bread. Mins after, one of the waitresses walking by my table, brings a glass of water and doesn’t stop at my table. As she is placing the water she asked if I ordered yet? I said no. She walks away to help other ppl and clearing off tables for other ppl coming in. So not only did the ppl who came in 20mins after me get bread but they also got a whole meal brought to their table and here I am have been sitting for 20mins and still no one has taken my order. I had to get the attention of the waitress. She walks over and I ask how did these people get their food before I can even place my order and I been in here 20 before they walked in? She tried to brush the situation under the rug and basically told me don’t worry don’t worry, do I want to order now? I was gonna still order and I swear everything in my didn’t want to eat there any more and I got up and walked out. I feel disrespected. And that’s the last they will see me. I used to spend money there.
I’ve eaten here plenty, sometimes 3 or 4x a week. Aside from the roach I saw once on the dining room wall (could be the fault of the neighboring convenience store), I thought it was a good value. Although mileage varies after noon, when the managers disappear. Today was one such experience. Ordered some food, the fried potatoes were a bit cold inside (at least the first one was). Not ice cold, but cold. I told the waitress the one I ate was cold and began to break apart others so I could have her feel the inside temperature. She didnt seem interested and responded in Spanish that I was “playing with my food”. I shrugged it off because its a dumb thing to say (I mean, if its my food, why do you care if i’m “playing” with it???). I tried explaining that the kitchen seems to lose their mind after about 12 or 1pm (again, when the managers leave), because the tater tots were not the only issue. The appearance of the food on my plate was such that the kitchen should have never let it go out like that, but they did and the waitress went along with it, which speaks volumes. The waitress proceeded to take my food back to the kitchen, but I wasn’t really interested in eating whatever they brought next. Having eaten only one tater tot and not consumed anything else, I just said “no, gracias” and got up and left. I thought that was the end.
I went to meet up w/ my wife in the salon next door, I explained that the waitress forgot to make the cortadito she asked me for (too busy being adversarial I guess?), and now I wasnt going to stick around. Suddenly an older, toothless guy comes into the salon saying “hey, you didnt pay for your food”. I’m like uhhhh.. he proceeds to tell me the waitress is going to have to pay for my food (even though I didnt eat anything). He said “yeah I watched you, you were playing with your food”. WTH??? I said “so what, you came here for a confrontation?”. I thought he was about to fight me. He said no, just to tell you that the waitress has to pay for your food. I said in a mixture of English/Spanish, no, nobody’s coming out of pocket for my food. Mostly so my wife and the other witnesses (Spanish speakers) understood what was happening. The guy took offense and said “DONT SPEAK TO ME IN SPANISH,” yada yada yada, even though he was obviously hispanic and speaks the language. Being blown away at all of this, I said lets go settle this with the waitress. He continued talking smack and berating me during the short walk back to the restaurant, he was walking backwards in front of me and even took my picture! Despite that i’d done nothing wrong, except order food in the wrongest of places…
I walked in and immediately told the waitress, look, this guy’s saying ur gonna have to pay for my food, is that true? She never gave me an answer. And by that time my wife followed me in, knowing I do not like arguing with people in Spanish (it’s not my native language). The wife really lit into the waitress because its apparent she was talking about me with the whole restaurant in an inflammatory manner, which led to him trying to track me down. Since the staff never told me they were going to come out of pocket, I told the wife we’re leaving. Then the people in the salon gave us an earful about how much they dislike the restaurant because of stupidity like this.
To the owners/manegement: I want you to understand that the actions of this employee, needlessly inflaming the situation, telling people she would have to pay for my meal (one tater tot!!!) whether true or not, could have led to physical violence. You, the waitress, and the aggressor would have been civilly and criminally liable for your actions. What if I walked in and someone shot me? You’d be sued into oblivion and your restaurant closed for months. You’d never recover from this.
This ordeal is quite unnerving, and has caused me to seriously reconsider where I dine. As the old saying goes, “el barato sale caro”.
