We recently visited Howling Wolf for the first time and immediately wished we had gone sooner. The atmosphere is upscale, the seating comfortable, and the decorations beautiful. The staff was friendly and seated us by the window, perfect for people watching.

The food exceeded my expectations. Everything we ate came out hot, fresh, and the portions were more than generous. The complimentary salsa had a bit of heat – not your typical salsa. We shared an order of chicken taquitos, which were crispy and stuffed with seasoned chicken. My only complaint is that I wish the sauce served with them had more spice. I also tried a few of their specialty tacos – Grilled Fish, Al Pastor, and Carnitas. The Carnitas were my favorite overall, but the others were still good. Prices were a bit steep, but I would gladly come back because the quality of the food is incredible. Bonus tip – try their Sangria Roja, it is one of the best glasses of sangria I’ve had in recent memory.

The service was appalling, came out in dribs and dabs with non of us getting our food together, and had to wait even longer for cutlery. The Worse Fajitas we have ever had not an ounce of seasoning, dry and bland and when we told the waitress that the food was awful she just said oh! Probably worse place we have eaten in Portsmouth

The hubby and I finally made it to the Howling Wolf this past weekend, and after my first sip of the Original Margarita, I knew I couldn’t let another day pass without giving Sandy (or is it Sandi?) a shoutout for crafting the best Margarita in Portsmouth. The Skinny Margarita was equally refreshing (first for me), and while I can’t quite recall our third drink , our lime-slicing mixologist of the day definitely knew their craft.

We hadn’t planned to order food but ended up splitting a veggie quesadilla—and I’m so glad we did. Every ingredient tasted fresh and looked vibrant (I will capture photographic proof next time), far above what you’ll find at some of the older Mexican joints in the 603. Naturally, we couldn’t resist a basket of chips and salsa, which were spot-on from the first bite.

Friendly staff, generous pours, salsa worth bottling, and fresh vegetarian options—no complaints here. We’ll be back to explore more of the menu and update this review when we do (since I somehow only managed one photo this time!).

I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn’t live up to the hype. The tacos were pretty underwhelming — the tortillas tasted stale and the fillings were bland and lacking seasoning. Service felt rushed and a bit indifferent, like they just wanted to move people through rather than actually care about the experience. For the price, I expected something much better. Unfortunately, there are plenty of other taco spots that do it way better.

I love the atmosphere in this place. I had a mango margarita and nachos. Both were amazing. I plan to go back and try some “real” food, I’m not sure that judging a places food based on nachos is fair. Nachos are easy. ‍♀️ The margarita came in a pint glass, I don’t really care about the shape of the glass I care about the drink inside it. This place has a fun casual atmosphere and I will definitely go back.

Highly recommend the jalapeños as an appetizer, carne asada tacos for the entree.

Fresh fruits, real meat used (as silly as that sounds, you can tell it was real cuts of steak).

Grilled fish, grilled shrimp tacos were amazing as well, super fresh!!

We will be returning

We visited Howling Wolf for lunch recently, and it was a fantastic experience! I ordered a spicy margarita and the Wolf Burrito. The burrito was enormous—seriously, I couldn’t believe the size—and it was absolutely delicious. The chips were crispy and flavorful, a perfect accompaniment.

The spicy margarita was beautifully crafted and tasted amazing, but my only critique is that it was served in a pint glass, which felt a little off for a margarita.

Aside from that minor detail, everything else was perfect. The service was outstanding, and the food was incredible. We’ll definitely be back

Sandy is an absolute standout bartender! From the moment we arrived, she made everyone feel welcome with her warm personality and incredible attention to detail. Her drink recommendations were spot-on, and every cocktail she mixed was perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious.

What really sets Sandy apart is her energy—she’s friendly, professional, and genuinely fun to be around. She kept the bar running smoothly even during the busiest moments, all while making each guest feel like they were her top priority.

If you’re lucky enough to have Sandy behind the bar, you’re guaranteed a good beverage!

The BEST margarita. I got the classic and it was so refreshing – which is uncommon for a marg – and so tasty. Perfectly made! The food was also really good and our server was great!! This would be a regular for us if we lived in the area.
