A grey Saturday, where better to be than a warm, dry pub with great beer and food. Lovely retro atmosphere. Friendly people. The word is Sunday roast worth booking.

Sunday roast is good but service is subpar. Took a long time to get your order and another bit to get what you ordered. Last time couldn’t even get dessert because apparently time was up (reservation) due to very slow service.
Ambient is good, same for decor.
Rated 4 stars due to actually good food but honestly it’s more a 3.5 due to problems explained above.

The place is so lovely, especially at Christmas! I’ve been several times and the food is great however it’s £28 a platter and this time I got barely any meat and for £28 I would expect way more.

Was recommended to go for Sunday lunch – so I went,
Walked in to a nice pub smell (later replaced by the smell of roasts). 2 staff didn’t look up or say Ello in what was a 20% capacity pub at the time
.
Told can’t get a roast as need to book – was not offered any other food option or perhaps that they might check with the kitchen. All good.
Guinea’s was tasty but bit toppy for Portsmouth or anywhere outside london @6.50. Flavourful tho.
Can’t recommend either way as didn’t get a chance to try the food

Visiting Portsmouth for 3 nights and decided to try the Sunday Roast based on the Google reviews. Food was delicious! 2 adults + 11 y.o. shared the Gov’nors Roast (beef, chicken and pork plus all the sides) plus and additional side of veggies. Bettered cooked perfectly – cooked through and not mush. Everything was seasoned but not salty too. The beef and pork were our favorites so we ordered another Regular portion of beef.
Only complaint is that the portion of cauliflower cheese and pigs in blanket were very small (we only got one). Otherwise everything was fantastic and we would recommend this to anyone!

Went here for a birthday meal as was graving BBQ and seen good reviews about this place. Very disappointing. The brisket and burnt ends tasted like petrol/plastic. The coleslaw was shredded carrots and cabbage with no sauce, the corn was not buttered, the gravy was probably granules, the pickles were soggy, the mac and cheese had no sauce or flavor, the food in general was cold and lacked flavor, when there was flavor it was that of petrol/plastic. 1/4 of the tray was also Peppers, bit steep for £60. The fried and BBQ sauce were nice. The atmosphere was strange but had cute fairy lights. The service was standard, however, when we mentioned the food tasted off we weren’t given any apology. Shame looked like a good place.

Always have a great meal here. Have eaten many times since it opened, a long time ago now!
Their meat is what really sets them apart from other restaurants in the area, hard to get such a fantastic smokehouse flavour elsewhere in our city.
All of the usual dining menu items are cooked to a high standard and beautifully flavoured. A frequent visit for the Sunday Roasts has been had, try the Governer if you think you’re hard enough!
Staff are always friendly and helpful. Be sure to book a table just in case, this place gets very busy.

Great attentive and polite staff, nice pub with decent ales. Food was good but we found some of the meat platter a bit dry.
