Not the best customer service but definitely a 5 stars food. We get onion soup, fried sweet potatoes and some steaks and seriously everything it was amazing!

My wife and I stopped by right around 5 o’clock when they open. We were the third table seated. The wait staff was definitely attentive, but the server totally forgot our drinks (they didn’t show up on our bill so we were glad we didn’t have to mention it). The food was really good. My wife ordered the tenderloin, medium, and she loved it. I ordered a burger with bacon, medium, but it came out well done. It still tasted great so I didn’t mention that it was overcooked. We also got the “salad bar” with our entrees, which was also good. Overall, we walked out of there pretty stuffed and satisfied. We’ll likely go back at some point if we’re in the area.

I had a great experience from the wait staff to the food. I recommend the Makawao Steakhouse but I would suggest you make reservations.

We arrived early for our reservation and stood in the front unacknowledged for 5 minutes before a server asked if we had been helped. Once seated, we were immediately given water which was awesome considering I had a small child with me. We ordered pork fries as an appetizer and it was amazing! I ordered the bone in ribeye and my husband had the scallops. When we got our food, I found a hair in my potatoes. Disgustingly, I brushed it off and tried to not let it ruin our dinner since we had an extremely long adventure that day and just wanted a nice meal. It was on top of the food and i understand mistakes happen so i tried to move forward. Until we found a SECOND hair in the potatoes! I called my serve over and informed her of the situation. She replied with, “that’s embarrassing” and rushed away. I asked to just remove the food and take it off of the bill since no more than a bite had been taken. Later when the bill came they removed my husbands plate and sent us home with a free dessert, which didn’t really make sense but we weren’t going to complain further since we just wanted to leave. I’m disappointed with the service considering it’s over $50 a plate. The steak was cooked perfectly which is why I will give this place 3 stars but for the price and extremely awkward absent service, I would recommend trying somewhere else out.

We rated Makawao our #1 restaurant stop on a recent week (October 2013) on Maui. Had great fresh fish and island steak, salad bar variety is upgraded and I wish I could remember the island salad dressing they had – if anyone knows, please tell me. It was fabulous. We sat in the lounge which we prefer over the wooden chairs in the more public area. Fine bar service, and wait service from Chelsea was home town perfect. If there were one complaint it was that the Calamari was taken off the menu — their best dish sacrificed because the new owner couldn’t make money off it (they charged something like $10 in the past). I’m telling you now, put it back on and charge $22, it was worth it. No one on the island served Calamari like you did. Won’t stop us from coming back. Place feels like, well, upcountry when we’re there. Thanks for a wonderful dining experience.

We had a lot of fun there. Very dark and intimate dining room. and the feeling was very “back in time” And we loved that about it!
The steaks were great and we ordered fish as well. We got what we came for…steak and fish!!
If you are looking for a place to treat you like a king/queen- then stay at your resort.
If you want to know what it feels like to be a local having a nice night out, GO!

So we decided on the fly to check out this place on a very breezy night in Makawao and this place was a good surprise. Walking in kind of reminded me of the old Chicago vibe, the bar was at the center and Sinatra music was playing, it felt cozy inside which worked since it happened to be really cool that night. They close at 9pm but last call is at 930 so if you walked in later, you will get the service and not feel rushed. We had the Calamari Steak which was crisp and cooked perfectly, not chewy at all. The lemon caper sauce that came with it was perfect and not too lemony. The Ribeye was cooked nicely and you can taste the awesome grilled flavor. The best one we truly enjoyed was the Truffle Fries, it was real crunchy because of some coating they used on the fries, with parmesan cheese and the truffle flavor came through nicely. We just walked in, there was no issue getting a table, maybe because we came in a little later. It is street parking so it can be challenging if you went there earlier in the day. Our server could have smiled a little bit more, but everyone was really attentive , at least 4 people came to our table to check on us, very consistent water refills and empty plates were cleared out quickly. It was a good experience and was enjoyable.

New ownership. They don’t use local beef. All imported. Had a New York cut that was not even worth half the price, was flavorless. Sides were bland. Took forever to get food once ordered. Confused kitchen and substandard supervision and culinary talent. They tout farm to table but they are not local. A sad demise of what was an excellent locally sourced restaurant. Buyers beware. Far better places to eat around. There is a local joke about how tourists like anything Maui.. this restaurant is a prime example
