I also love how many veggie-forward options they offer, making it super easy to dine here no matter your preferences. And the desserts? They carry several traditional Vietnamese sweets you rarely find in the States anymore—such a special treat and a total standout.
If you’re looking for authentic Vietnamese cuisine that actually hits, Grain River is it. A must-try.
It looked like they filled this large bowl with 1/2 noodles & 1/2 meat, then topped off the remaining space with broth. No room for beansprouts and other herbs you want to add cause it came so full! Flavor was good as well. Can’t wait to try their other dishes!
Update: Still awesome! lol
To start we ordered the Spring Rolls and they were very very tasty and a larger size than the ones we’ve had at other places. My husband had the Pho noodle soup with slices of beef, the small bowl is more than plenty for one person, I tasted the broth that IMO is the key component of the soup and it didn’t have the flavor of all the spices that are supposed to be used in it. It tasted just like plain broth with some salt.
I ordered the Pad Thai with chicken and it was a huge disappointment. I’ve had this dish in several Thai restaurants and I know how the sauce should taste. Here there was no hint of tamarind, fish sauce or cayenne in the noodles. The servings were very generous and prices are reasonable.
Service was good and I liked the setting. We might give it a second chance and order something different.
Off the bat, the iced coffee was not strong at all, and there was a lot of condensed milk at the bottom of the cup – too much for my taste. I was hoping for strong bitterness to be balanced by sweetness, but it was all sugar. But sure, I thought, maybe they just make it a little sweet. My banh mi was soggy on arrival, and with the vegetables separate. I’ve never had to assemble my own before, and I don’t see the point in giving the vegetables on the side if the sandwich is soggy already.
Also, our fried spring rolls were clearly frozen from a big restaurant supplier.
Not worth the price at all.
However I will NOT return to this place. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere!
I’d say overall a mixed review.
We were greeted immediately with a smile, and offered to seat ourselves anywhere.
The restaurant was not very busy, so thankfully nice and quiet, with a comfy atmosphere.
We ordered a Shrimp Bánh Mí, and Mòn Xáo.
Sorry to say the Bánh Mí was not nearly as good as others in Tucson. While it was tasty and the shrimp were well cooked, the bread required a bit more toasting and it was lacking in sauce, so it was a tad dry.
On the very positive side the Mòn Xáo had everything going for it. A very tasty and bright sauce accompanied well cooked shrimp, pork, chicken, and veggies. It was the star of the meal. We noticed other diners ordering it, so I’m not surprised at its popularity.
While at first glance the menu prices seemed high, I’d say in today’s economy they’re about average, and the Mòn Xáo was plentiful.
In summary, I don’t know if I’d make the trip again just for this, but it would likely be a place to stop in again if I were passing by.
The Chạo Tôm (Sugarcane shrimp) may be the best I have had. The shrimp paste is mildly seasoned to allow the shrimp flavor to come through. Yum!
Búns are great and light. Remember these are mildly flavored and enhanced with whatever condiments you like from the table; hoisin, sriracha, etc as well as the dipping fish sauce served on the side.
Broken rice dishes come with those yummy egg cakes and shrimp cakes.
The specialty soups are rich and flavorful as well.
We have not tried the fusion dishes… why would I when the Vietnamese dishes are so yummy, though I would agree with other reviewers the Bahn mi’s are not as good here as the shops that only do Bahn Mi. I guess it’s on the menu like the fusion is- to please all paletes.
This is one restaurant I crave.
The soup and spring rolls took a while, but we’re both delicious and well worth the wait. Our entrees were large and delicious. The waitress was attentive, but not obtrusive.
We’ll return and unlike some were not put off by them wanting to add a 3.5% surcharge if you used a card. We were not, and simply paid cash.
