Don’t let the name fool you as they offer a full bar including a tasty selection of specialty margaritas in addition to a great mezcal selection. Our apps and entrees were delicious – especially the guacamole and the tuna tostadas.
This urban sanctuary is the perfect place to meet for a drink before or after your meal – or even a fun hideaway for a great dinner!
This Mezcaleria is a gem in the heart of downtown Charleston. With its expansive collection of mezcal and tequila, large rooftop patio, and warm ambiance, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a delicious drink and a bite to eat with friends or a loved one.
Not the easiest to find, but well worth the adventure. I’ll be back the next time I’m in town.
After about 10 minutes of waiting we assumed maybe we were supposed to order at the bar. So we walk up to the relatively empty bar which only had 3-4 patrons and 2 working bartenders. We stood there card in hand ready to start a tab for another 5 minutes. We didn’t even get a glance from the bartenders, they either had their heads down or were busy talking with patrons that already had their drinks. My wife went out to the patio to grab a different table since it was a nice day and much easier to see out there. It was there that a server informed us the patio is the only section with servers and she could take our order.
So finally after 15 minutes someone was helping us. To her credit she was very sweet and attentive, she let us know it was her first shift so she apologized if she wasn’t sure about something. We order 3 drinks, a Oaxacan Paloma, a Mezcal Sazerac, and a Chile Mango Margarita. We also inquired about the happy hour menu since it was 4:30, she apologized and told us that happy hour only applied to the restaurant downstairs. Someone explain to me how happy hour, a very bar-centric event is not offered at their bar, but is at the restaurant downstairs? We weren’t even trying to order real dishes, just some nachos. Not only does the happy hour not apply, but you can’t even get nachos upstairs.
To be clear this was not the servers fault at all, nor did we offer any rebuttal when she told us this. We simply asked if we could just get some chips and salsa instead. After about 10 minutes our drinks arrive. I take a sip of my Paloma and can’t believe how they’ve massacred the drink. The only way that I can describe it is if someone took a scoop of dishwater and added a splash of mezcal and poured it over ice. I know it’s not the mezcal because I love 400 conejos. It was simply a terribly mixed drink. The grapefruit (squirt) was nowhere to be found in the drink. It had no business being called a Paloma. My wife’s margarita was mediocre and certainly not worth the $14 price tag. The sazerac was the only decent drink of the bunch.
To make matters worse the chips and salsa arrive and we were speechless with how awful the salsa is. We have a word in Spanish for that salsa called “desabrida” meaning “tasteless”. It tasted as though someone put celery, lettuce, cilantro, and a single grape tomato into a blender and said “ooh hope it’s not too spicy.”
Overall this is a bar that put the decor first and menu/service second. Go elsewhere.
